This is a must have book for Chesapeake Bay skipjack devotees as well as others interested in work boats. Pat's over 50 beautiful color photos of skipjacks in action on the Cheapeakee Bay are worth the price by themselves. Ms Vojtech supports the photos with a facinating history of the oyster tonging and dredging along vignets of actual people in the trade. Interesting, is the discussion of economics which has extended the lfie of working sail on the Chesapeake to protect the oyster beds from depletion.

Ms. Vojtech captures the heart and soul of the Chesapeake bay with her delightful book on skipjacks. If you think that this book is just a book of pictures, you're wrong. While the photographs are superb, it is the writing that brings to the forefront the hard and lonely life of a waterman.
This book should be an essential element of personal library within a few hours drive of the bay.

A great small book on this wonderful, but disappearing work boat used by oyster man on the Chesapeake Bay beginning after the Civil War. She is an excellent photographer who beautifully illustrated the work with color photos. I read a later book written by an author whose last name is White on these boats and their captains so I had that experience. If you want one book to tell the story of this storied-work boat, then Pat Vojtech's work is the one to get. I'd love to meet her and learn more about her photography.

A great photographic record on these vanishing Chesapeake workboats.
The author does a great job in recording the builders, the watermen, the preservers and the operators of the skipjack.
The historic record of over 500 boats is a treasure in itself.
