Welcome to my page. I was born and raised in New York City, and after earning an MFA in film making, proceeded to do some serious sailing- from the Galapagos Islands to the coast of Turkey, including three Atlantic crossings. Experienced on tugboats, research vessels, private yachts, and traditional sailing ships- such as Sea Cloud, Young America, Spirit of Massachusetts, and Amistad- and licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard as Master Mariner of any type of private or commercial vessel on all waters of the world.
In between, I've worked to conserve and protect the marine environment- as director of a conservation and education program on Long Island Sound, head of a statewide environmental coalition, environmental educator on Long Island Sound and the Chesapeake Bay, and advocate/fund raiser for environmental education and restoration projects. I also enjoy visiting schools to talk with children about writing and ecology.
Thanks to my publishers: Landfall Navigation for "The Celestial Navigation Mystery: Solved" and Cornell Maritime Press/Tidewater Publishers for the others. In addition to these books, I've written for Cruising World, The Mariner, Offshore, Oceans, Sailing, and WoodenBoat magazines.
