Book Description

February 1998
In 1927, immigrant brothers in Chicago struggled to found this great label, which went on to become the home of leading blues artists (such as Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, HowlinÕ Wolf, Etta James and many other) for decades. Chess celbrated its 50th Anniversary in 1997, and this excellent collection is a tribute, featuring highlights from Chess reissue CDs from 1947 to 1967. It includes notes about the label and artists, lots of photos, and P/V/G arrangements of 20 classic blues tunes: Baby, What You Want Me To Do * Blues With A Feeling * Fattening Frogs for Snakes * Help Me * IÕm A Man * Sugar Mama * Sugar Sweet * ThatÕs All Right * Twenty-Four Hours * You Shook Me * more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Book of Chicago Blues, August 31, 2000
This review is from: Chess Blues Classics (Paperback)
If you want to play Chicago blues this book will get you on your way. The book contains songs done by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Otis Rush, Sonny Boy Williamson, Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, Lowell Fulsom, Etta James and others. These songs are some of the best selections from the "Chess Blues Classics" compilations. There are 2 CD's available, Volume I (1947 to 1956) and II (1957 to 1967). These are great CD's, by the way, of music that has inspired and to some extent continues to inspire Rock&Roll.

For the songs I've played so far, the keys were right, the lyrics were right (well almost), the chord changes were right, and the transcribed solos were faithful enough to get you going but certainly not 100% accurate. You can tell this is not meant to be a formal transcription book but more of a sketch arrangement, which is faithful to the recording. The arrangements are of an intermediate level. They include the introductions, the key licks and some of the nice solos. They are pretty good for allowing a guitar or piano to accompany a vocalist. Though useable I suppose without the CD's, you really need to hear the songs to get the right feel. And of course you can play along that way too.

The following is in the songbook:

Baby, What You Want Me To Do; Big Town Playboy; Blues With A Feeling; Don't Start Me To Talkin'; Eisenhower Blues; Fattening Frogs For Snakes; Help Me; I'm A Man; I'd Rather Go Blind; One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer; Reconsider Baby; Smokestack Lightning; So Many Roads-So Many Trains; Sugar Mama; Sugar Sweet; Take The Bitter With The Sweet; That's All Right; Twenty-four Hours; You Shook Me; Walking By Myself
