Book Description

March 1, 2007

Popular chess author Steve Giddins presents 101 ideas that are vital to successful endgame play. By absorbing and understanding these concepts and methods, you will ensure that you will spot them when they are possible in your own games. This is an ideal book to read without using a chess set, as the abundant diagrams guide you through the analysis and illustrate the key points. All types of endings are covered, including both simple technical situations and more complex strategic battles. The tips include both pithy rules of thumb and general thinking methods. The examples are drawn from an immense variety of sources and based on Giddins's experiences as a player, coach and pupil.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised by the excellence of this book, December 27, 2008

This review is from: 101 Chess Endgame Tips (Paperback)
USCF 2000, FIDE 1984.

I have seen some of Gambit's other "101" books, and none of them really impressed me (they were okay for beginning or intermediate players, but not suited for advanced players). I was actually going to buy this book for teaching purposes, but when I started going through it I was surprised by how many things I learned! Giddins does a brilliant job of explaining various strategic concepts in a short amount of space. The presentation is very clear: it is evident that, even for such a thin book, Giddins worked extremely hard on selecting the best examples he could.

Indeed, this book could be an excellent primer in strategic endgame play before one works with Shereshevsky's Endgame Strategy (I recognized at least one example from Shereshevsky's book, but this is not a bad thing!).

Tips 1-6: Kings and Pawns
Tips 7-14: Knights
Tips 15-28: Bishops
Tips 29-36: Knights and Bishops
Tips 37-61: Rooks
Tips 62-64: Queens
Tips 65-101: Strategy and Technique

Highly recommended!
