This review is from: Chess Explorations (Paperback)
More ore less accidentally I stumbled across a copy of this outstanding work, and I have to admit shamefully that I had never heard of the author or any of his works before. But just after a few minutes of reading the book had totally captured my mind. Winter writes in intelligent and witty style on a vast range of topics. He is at his best when pointing out mistakes and fallacies in other authors' works, which sadly enough are too often just fast and sloppily written. But his criticism is always objective, he never decries his colleagues and is always able to give evidence for his criticism. Maybe the book is most fascinating for those who already have developed a deeper interest in chess history, curiosities etc., but even the player who just has more interest in the game than just playing the odd game will enjoy many delightful hours of reading. Furthermore, the book is suited for players of every strength and does not contain the same old anectodes that have been told and retold in scores of volumes before. Winter's book is an excellent choice as a present to any chess addict. Warmly recommended!!
