Book Description

June 1, 2000

The best chess, 1900-1999, in historical context: like the rest of the world, the game of chess has changed enormously during the 20th century. This book surveys these developments by focusing on the top events, greatest achievements and most brilliant games, year-by-year.

This instructive and engaging book places the chess material in its historical context with a review of the main stories of each year away from the chessboard. It will delight all those with a general interest in chess and its players, whether they are seeking to improve their game, gain a better appreciation of our chess heritage, or simply looking for entertainment.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book and a future collector's item., April 20, 2001

A special recommendation [and prize] goes to Graham Burgess and "Gambit" publications for their new book, "Chess Highlights of the 20th Century." (Published, 1999.) A beautiful hard-back book, well worth the [money] that I paid for it! This has got to be one of the best books of the last 25 years for a lot of different reasons. A game or a part of a game represents each year. There is also a list of the most outstanding chess accomplishments of that year. There are bunches of really great photo's in the center of the book. And there is a brief recap of each of the most important news [historical] events, from an international viewpoint, for each year. A book for the real collector of fine and beautiful chess books. Destined to be a Classic!!

If you want to know more about the chess history, this is an excelent book to read and see. His pages are plenty of information and images that can make you enjoy the rich history of the king of the games. Here, year by year, you can make a trip over 64 squares and the most important players.
