Editorial Reviews

The musical "Chess" was one of the most anticipated productions every to hit the London stage. This Broadway-bound extravaganze marks the first collaboration between master of lyrics Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame) and Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, formerly of the mega-platinum group Abba, and the hit play "Mamma Mia". The intriguing story focuses on an international chess match pitting Russian against American. CHESS MOVES captures the best of the music, the performances (by the artists from the hit soundtrack album) and the story. Note: The performances created for this video are not extracts of a stage performance, but videos created for this home video release by Columbia Pictures. Track listing: "One Night in Bangkok" (Murray Head), "Nobody's Side" (Elaine Paige), "The Arbiter" (Bjorn Skifs), "I Know Him So Well" (Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson), "Play the Child" (Murray Head)

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the 80's, July 25, 2010
This review is from: Chess Moves (Music From the Chess Musical) (VHS Tape)
5 Stars because chess is one of my favourite musicals. The individual videos are on you tube and I suggest you check them out for an 80's rollercoaster ride. The visuals are unintentionally hilarious after all this time, but the incredible music still shines through. Wonderful!

5.0 out of 5 stars Chess Moves, February 21, 2008
This review is from: Chess Moves (Music From the Chess Musical) (VHS Tape)
Chess Moves is a video show accompanying the album. Tim Rice explains the significance of the clips. We see smoky lighting and detached characters. Included are One Night In Bangkok, Nobody's Side, The Arbiter, I Know Him So Well and Pity The Child. At the end of Chess Moves, the American raises the white king above his head as the black player resigns. Black and white are traditional colors of both chessmen and squares. Players are known as black and white. White has an advantage because it moves first. In a series of games, players alternately play each color. Games last between 40 and 50 moves.
