Book Description

December 17, 2000
Located in a picturesque setting of rolling hills, rich farmland, and lush forests, Chester County belongs to one of South Carolina's most historic regions: the Olde English District. From its role in the Revolutionary War to its present position in Palmetto politics, culture, and commerce, Chester County has played a vital role in the direction and development of South Carolina over the years.

Celebrating the Chester County of yesteryear, this volume, using over 200 vintage black-and-white photographs, explores the county's history and geography, from its rural backroads to the bustling streets of downtown Chester. Chester County provides

a rare opportunity for readers to experience the everyday life of previous generations, showcasing their places of worship, their early business ventures, and their residences. Roaming the countryside of decades past, through a landscape of bountiful cotton and turn-of-the-century textile mills, readers of all ages will discover their hometowns anew, meeting common and prominent citizens, such as veterans, teachers, farmers, mayors, businessmen, and other civic leaders. These images and their stories recall a simpler time and preserve for future generations visions of Chester County's unique past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not only the upper crust, but ordinary lives are documented too!, January 13, 2010

This review is from: Chester County (SC) (Images of America) (Paperback)
This is a fascinating compilation of photographs from the early to mid 20th century. Events in Chester history, family pictures, and candid snapshots provide a mosaic of this small historic South Carolina town equidistant between Columbia SC and Charlotte, NC. Nearly every carefully selected picture contains unique information useful to historians, genealogists, and anyone with connexions to Chester.

What I especially like about it is that care has been taken to document not only the oft photographed scenes and events, but the general citizenry including African Americans, women, and the textile mills and their workers, This along with Heritage History of Chester County, South Carolina and Souvenir of Chester, South Carolina gives a well rounded picture of Chester SC.
