If you aren't familiar with this series, Chester the cat is the star of the book. Melanie Watt is the author. In each book, Chester the character struggles with the author Melanie, wresting the red editing marker from her and writing the story to fit his own desires.
When I found out that the third book, Chester's Masterpiece, was being released, I hoped it would live up to the other two. I have to say that I think it exceeds them.
I do enjoy the premise, but don't find it nearly as hilarious as my kids, 6 and 11, do (and they do find them hilarious). But in Chester's Masterpiece, Chester is determined to write his own story. As he does this, author Melanie Watt guides him in creating character and conflict. What a creative and interesting way to introduce kids to the structure of a story! I can see teachers using this in the classroom with young elementary school students to help them identify these elements, or even as a help to older elementary students who begin writing their own stories.
My 6 year old daughter can also read them. YEAH!!! Chester!!!!
My favorite line is from the first book -- "Chester's busy."
This is my daughters new favorite. She is in 1st grade. My 4 year old daugther loves it too. They both giggle everytime I get to the part where Chester is trying to be nice to the mouse and says "Hey you look great, have you been working out?".
Anyway....I highly recommend this book to any Chester lovers out there. We've had the book about a month and the book cover is already ripping because we read it every night. We'll end up tossing the cover in the garbage soon. No big deal...thats what they are for.
Without her supplies, Melanie instructs Chester though the writing process and what makes a good story by leaving post-it notes on his drafts - thus teaching readers the ingredients of a good story, story structure, and the importance of good illustrations.
Hilarity ensues. And ensues. And ensues some more. Chester's writings make my daughter laugh every time she reads them. Even on the 1,000th time, or is it the 10,000th time? :) She literally cannot get enough of this book!
Unequivocally her favorite book for over a year, she is just turned 7. She now reads it to her 2-and-a-half year old sister, who thinks the book is equally funny.
