Chet - thrown off by some misguided production
on April 3, 2013
Let me start by countering one of the points made by another reviewer - if you love the sound of classic Chet Atkins, there's a very good chance you WILL NOT like this CD.
Don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong here with Chet's amazing musicianship. What really hurts this effort IMO is some seriously ill-advised production ideas from producer Darryl Dybka. I'm guessing some misguided sap from the record company said to Chet "hey, let's give the next album a more modern contemporary sound!" What we end up with is lots of synthesizers (including the over used dreadful sound of the Yamaha DX7 all over this recording) electronic drum programming (which literally sounds like someone whacking a trash can lid with a big stick), used in a very MOR "Adult Contemporary" style. It's Chet Atkins all dressed up in 80's polish and gloss. Fine for a Michael Bolton or a Ray Parker, Jr. But to me, just sounds WAY out of place for Chet's style.
I bought this one in an effort to round out my already significant Atkins collection. I see know that this one could have easily been skipped. Buyer beware. Get ANY of his other recordings before this one.
