Chet's set,
By William Faust (Columbus, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chet Baker Big Band (Audio CD)
Most of us probably think of Chet Baker in a small group setting, either with Gerry Mulligan and the famous piano-less quartet or later with Russ Freeman. But this gem from the 1950's features Chet in a west coast studio band setting with lots of great charts that not only showcase Baker's laid back improvisational talents but some very solid section work by both the brass and reeds relying on some great arrangements of standards and originals. This session really swings and while there's none of Chet's heartfelt vocals here, there's plenty of his horn to go around and a lot of great west coast big band sound. If you're into Bill Holman, Shorty Rogers, Marty Paich or any of the 50's California cool sounds, this is another fine recording to add to the collection.
