One of the BEST restoration books for your 1970-75 Chevrolet,
By A Customer
This review is from: Chevrolet by the Numbers 1970-75: The Essential Chevrolet Parts Reference (Paperback)
Being the only restoration guide based on materials from the Chevrolet archives, it is one of the most essential parts identification references available. Information and original part numbers on nearly everything from the wheels to the water pump are explained via well-written text, schematic diagrams, and photographs in 17 chapters (over 300 pages). Vehicle identification and firewall tags are also covered. Engine codes for six engine sizes are thoroughly covered, including the rare 262ci. There are only three complaints concerning the book: the photographs are all black and white, some of the diagrams are rather difficult to read, and paint codes are not covered when the ID codes are explained. However, this restoration guide is a must-have for the serious classic Chevrolet collector.

I work in a full line GM dealership and we have a copy of this and it's worn out from using as help to find parts and to see who's got what for sale when all they can tell you is a casting or part number. This guy did tons of homework on this book BEFORE he printed one.

Good detail not only on VIN's but cylinder heads, engine blocks, etc. Only other comparable book is Chevy Small Block Engine ID - but this is better.

This book contained the most complete collection of part numbers I have ever seen. Well organized and easy to understand. It will help you identify part numbers, date codes, VIN information, and much more. Well worth the price.

I have this copy plus the 65-69 and 70-75 versions and find all of them excellent reference material with one caveat, no information on 6 cylinder engines, heads, exhaust, etc. For the V8 enthusiast though, it's hard to beat.

This book is exceptional and details all the finer points that you must know when thinking about, or have purchased one of these fine cars. Take the time and read through this book and it will give you years of knowledge. The book will also educate you as to the correctness of the Chevrolet you either have, or are looking at. It also will help verify myths with acctual facts and documentation as tho the true nature of the cars and their history.

Chevrolet by the numbers is currently THE book for looking up Chevrolet casting numbers. Colvin includes information on just about any crankshaft, block, head, intake, carb, exhaust manifold, water pump, distributor, camshaft, rear axle. Small block as well as W-motor and big block is covered. Four volumes cover 1955-1975.
Applications and some illustrations are provided. You will see some specific engineering illustrations for some unique blocks, intakes, cylinder heads and etc. Many photos are also included. Besides the casting numbers, Colvin breaks down casting and manufacturing dates. One area where this book really shines is the section covering carbs. Every Holley, Carter, and Rochester used is listed. For instance, you will be able to look up exactly which Rochester 2bbl was used on a 1967 283 with auto trans, air conditioning, and Federal emissions, -vs- the carb used on a 283 auto without air, or a 283 with a stick and A/C, or a 283 with an automatic trans, A/C, and California emissions. To put it another way, if you want to know which of at least 6 different two barrel carbs was installed on your 1967 283, this is probably the only way to get that information. The section covering the Quadrajets, Carters, and Holley carbs is just as good. This is a wonderful book for your auto library. I have seen some, but not many errors. If you go to swap meets, or shop on ebay, this book will save you the purchase price many times over.

This book has everything you need to know about Chevrolet parts. Especially all the essential parts references. I found this book to be very educational in drivetrain parts, for big block and small blocks for a lot of different passenger cars. The book has had a lot of thought put into its writings. Very well Done
Thank You Brad Lorenz

I have a ton of restoration and numbers books as I do vettes and camaros and you have to have these to stay out of traps. This is one of the better overall references unless you are in to NCRS restoration then you need the year by year NCRS guides.
Its a big book but contains most of the numbers you really need. I have found errors in the Camaro white book. Best Camaro guides for 67-69 are authored by Jerry MacNeish which most Camaro Collectors already know.
