A little gross, a lot of fun, and very educational!, February 21, 2009
This review is from: Chewy, Gooey, Rumble, Plop (Hardcover)
FUN! FUN! FUN!! Chewy, Gooey, Rumble, Plop! is a "deliciously disgusting plop-up guide to the digestive system." This guide tells you just about all you need to know about the digestive system in an interactive, kid-friendly manner. It's gross enough to be entertaining, but not so gross that you won't want to read it. The cover features a touchable and a-little-too-realistic tongue licking an ice cream cone -- and it keeps getting better. Every page is filled with activities -- pop-ups, wheels to turn, tabs to pull, flaps to lift -- For example, the first page features a giang pop-up mouth, with a tongue sticking out. Other flaps show the different types of teeth. Flaps showing different facial expressions, when lifted, show foods that are salty, sweet, bitter, and sour.
Each page features a gross close-up photograph -- lift the flap, and you'll what the photograph is of -- taste pores on the tongue's surface, the lining of the esophags, the lining of the stomach. Other than these close-up photographs, the other illustrations are cute, cartoonish, and very kid friendly. Nothing too scary.
The book traces the path of food through the entire digestive system. In doing so, it teaches quite a bit about nutrition and diet. The last page is a giant pop up of a young boy sitting on the toilet -- with his "Adventures of Sewerman" comic book and socks strewn on the floor and his pet tarantula in the sink. The floor tiles are flaps to lift -- underneath you'll find an interesting poo fact -- like what causes diarrhea, the history of chamber pots, how manure is used as fertilizer.
Overall, highly recommended. This is one of those books that kids will keep coming back to, and the fun facts (like in an average lifetime, the esophagus squeezes 30-50 tons of mashed-up food, the weight of ten elephants) will stick with them for a long time.
Also highly recommended is
Blood and Goo and Boogers Too: A Heart-pounding Pop-up Guide to the Circulatory & Respiratory Systems, a "heart-pounding pop up guide to the circulatory and respiratory systems." featuring fabulous popups like a giant pickable nose and lungs that expand when you pull a flap.

Loved it from Chewy to Plop!, May 2, 2008
This review is from: Chewy, Gooey, Rumble, Plop (Hardcover)
I first came across the book when a family came into my office with it. The kids were around 5 years old and loved the book. The pop-ups, pull-tabs, and flip-ups looked so fun that I went on a search for the book. The book store in town carries the book for $20 and Amazon carries it for nearly half the price. While the book is fun to read (pull a sticky tongue, stretch out intestines, spin a stomach wheel, and more) you also have a better understanding of the digestive system - without really trying! I know keep my copy of the book in my office and highly recommend it to kids and adults. Too bad more books aren't done with this much fun.
