Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Vella Munn (Blackfeet Season) recounts the travails of warriors Grey Bear and Lone Hawk in Cheyenne Summer. Drought plagues the land and food is scarce; the Cheyenne must compete with the rival Pawnee for food. Wildfires sweep across the land, adding to the danger and drama. Various romantic intrigues and power struggles play out against this backdrop especially the tense rivalry between Grey Bear and Lone Hawk over what is best for the tribe. This will interest only those who know the genre and are willing to tolerate dialogue along the lines of "Look into my eyes and see the eyes of your death."

More About the Author

Bottom line, Vella Munn is a country hick. Born and raised in Northern California's gold country, she freely roamed the forests--and lived to write about it. She spent a total of 18 months in a city and vows to never do that again. These days she lives in rural Oregon where she happily writes about characters who, like her, love the sound of the wind in the evergreens. She occasionally runs off to the family cabin near Crater Lake where she thinks about writing. Married with two sons and an amazingly handsome grandson, she's owned by two dogs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent historical fiction, July 27, 2001
This review is from: Cheyenne Summer (Hardcover)
In 1800, drought has driven the buffalo away while the dryness makes wildfires frequent and nearly impossible to stop. In this environment, the Cheyenne and their rival the Pawnee vie for the dwindling food and water supplies and tempers are quite high.

Two Cheyenne leaders Grey Bear and Lone Hawk disagree on the future of their people. The intrepid Grey Bear wants war with the Pawnee in a winner takes all deadly scenario even though he knows many of his people will die. The cerebral Lone Hawk realizes that the Pawnee share the misery caused by the drought so that he wants both tribes to cooperate for the betterment of everyone. As a fire razes the Cheyenne, two women Touches the Wind and Seeks Fire become involved in the leadership battle that will determine the future of the Cheyenne.

CHEYENNE SUMMER is an exciting, action-packed, but deep look at the Cheyenne. The story line provides an incredible glimpse at a way of life during a major crisis. The characters seem genuine though Grey Bear’s military response seems difficult to accept when so many bellies are empty. Still Vella Munn paints an awesome landscape with strong portraits that show she is quite an artist when it comes historical fiction.

This story, written by Munn, is one of her best I have read so far. It has good descriptions and puts the reader in the midst of the action of those times. A well researched write. If you like historical work, this one may interest you.
