Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Formula characters, unlikely events and a sentimental version of U.S. history undermine this post-Civil War romance. Of biracial heritage, Alanna Caldwell is an Indian princess whose white father is a scion of Virginia blue bloods. Alanna lives with her Cheyenne maternal grandparents until the battle at Little Big Horn. Her grandfather is killed, her dying grandmother sends word to the girl's father. Capt. Nicholas Ballinger is dispatched to help, and the young man escorts the beautiful young woman east. Alanna saves Nicholas's life when their coach is attacked by robbers, and in the public scandal that ensues at their having been stranded alone, Nicholas marries her to save her reputation, although he distrusts women: during the war, Nicholas's Southern father was killed by Union troops for shooting his wife's Yankee lover. As Alanna works to make her marriage a real one, she learns that there is more to the old family tragedy than Nicholas suspects and becomes the agent of his reconciliation with his mother. O'Banyon is the author of the Savage Seasons series.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOOOOONDERFULLLLL. . . . . ., August 3, 1999

This review is from: Cheyenne Sunrise (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book and very touching. O'banyon is a wonderful story teller that keeps me up all night reading this book and others. throughout most of their journy Alana doesn't speak a word and he thinks she doesn't speak english, it is only to save his life from a bunch of pathetic outlaws that she utters her first words. He finds her to be a very capable woman, unlike any others he had met before, and then he hopelessly falls in love with her.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars..., February 23, 2008
This review is from: Cheyenne Sunrise (Paperback)
Description from the back of the book:

Alana Caldwell cursed the white blood that ran through her veins! The blue-eyed half-breed had known nothing but joy among the Cheyenne, but the white man had destroyed her way of life, and now the overbearing Captain Nicholas Ballinger had arrived to escort her - against her will - back to her father's home in Virginia. She fought the darkly handsome officer at every turn, clinging to her Indian ways and wondering at his notions of civilization. For certainly there was nothing civilized about the untamed yearnings he awakened as he cupped her ripe curves, rained tender kisses over her soft form and led her into a world of unforgettable ecstasy.

Nicholas Ballinger had one last duty to perform as a U.S. Cavalry officer - to make sure the troublesome half-breed waif, Alana Caldwell, safely reached her father in Virginia. Ballinger had no patience with females, and this one was proving to be a stubborn baggage, refusing his help and rebelling like a hellion against his attempts to get her cleaned up and presentable for the Richmond society she was about to join. He simply wanted Alana out of her filthy buckskins and off his hands, but once he glimpsed her - transformed from bedraggled brat to alluring beauty - he wasn't quite so eager to be rid of the raven-haired temptress. He wanted to hold her forever, to kiss her hungrily and savor her sweet response, to show her a love as fiery as a Cheyenne Sunrise

* I was really enjoyed this book & would've probably gave it 4 stars had I Nicholas been more likable. I really liked him the first third to half of the book but then I got sick of hearing him tell Alanna (Yes, 2 n's...not sure why they have 1 n on the back cover because that's not how it was spelled in the book) that she was his. "You are mine" he said so many times that I wanted to slap him & he seemed a little slow in the head because he never seemed to understand anything Alanna was telling him. Other that that I enjoyed the book quite a bit. If you are looking for a hot passionate romance though this book is not for you. It's a little slow in that department & they are apart quite often in the book. If a nice slow adventure is o.k. with you then give it a try.
