Book Description

January 1995
Chi gong, the cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years, has been proven effective in the prevention and cure of many diseases. Over sixty million Chinese practice chi gong, yet, unlike acupuncture and acupressure, it remains a mystery to most Americans. This ancient oriental therapy combines mental concentration and breathing exercises to activate and circulate our vital energy through the body's acupuncture meridians. With proven, step-by-step exercises the authors show how to: perform chi gong at home, from basic Standing-on-Stake exercises to the more advanced Magic Palm and One-Finger Art; increase vitality by maintaining the perfect balance of energies in your body; prevent and cure ulcers, hypertension, heart disease, and general aches and pains; and achieve a comfortable and therapeutic meditative state, promoting health and longevity. More than an instructional manual, Chi Gong represents the first comprehensive survey of this revolutionary healing art. Combining up-to-date information from Western scientific investigations and personal insights from Paul Dong's decade-long practice, the authors explore the mysterious link between chi gong and psychic phenomena, and provide profiles of chi gong masters, amazing healers who treat illness by directing a powerful bioenergy, external chi, at their patients' meridian points. Accessible discussions of chi gong's role in acupuncture and herbal medicine, chi gong's treatment of cancer, and a tour through one of China's many chi gong clinics round out this volume.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Practitioners of this ancient Chinese therapeutic art popular in New Age circles claim that chi gong can maintain and restore health through the balancing of chi , the body's vital energy. Journalist Dong and psychiatrist Esser provide extensive history and theory as well as instruction on performing basic chi gong exercises. They explain how a typical Chinese chi gong clinic operates, discuss paranormal phenomena attributed to chi gong , and comment on the relationship of chi and Western science. A well-executed treatment of a unique topic, this will appeal primarily to informed laypersons. Recommended for collections in alternative or traditional medicine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent exposition on Qigong!, January 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Chi Gong (Trade) (Paperback)
I first read this delightful, easy to understand and useful little book some 6 years ago (1992). Every time I read it, I learn something new. The chapters are well written, simple to understand and provide anyone ignorant of qigong with a great deal of information.

I enjoyed the material so much that I contacted the author, Master Paul Dong, and have trained with him since 1993. His methods are useful, valid, and of great merit. I highly recommend the book, and if possible to contact Master Dong directly for one-on-one training.

I also highly recommend his book "Empty Force" with Thomas Raffill. The basics of the method are presented in the book in good detail. Some have made comments that the method of Empty Force is not real.

These people have never taken the time to train in the method with anyone qualified in it, so their opinion is very hollow and without substance or fact. Those people should just be ignored. Others say that because the method is effective about 60% of the time, that it is not useful. To those self appointed pundits I say:

On their best day their best punch will fail at least 40% of the time.

Does that make their method of martial arts a fabrication? No, it makes them what all things are: imperfect. I have been involved in Martial arts since 1 9 7 0, and am always looking for tools to serve me in a conflict, if the Lin Kong Jing/Powerful Empty Force did not work, i would not practice it, and would not have spent the past s i x years of my life training in it, and teaching it in seminars around the world. If it were anything less than real, I would not keep getting asked back to teach. decide for yourself however, train and learn!!!

Sincerely,

Richard Mooney Senior Student of Master Paul Dong

I read the book 3years ago and practiced for a few weeks. My motive was to get rid of tendinitis in both elbows.I could not bend my arms to touch my face.In 2 weeks practice it was gone. I have now devoted myself to the practice. Thank you so much Master Paul Dong. It is my wish to learn from you in person.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not useful, not well written, April 1, 2004
There is little to recommend this book now that there are more English language books available on chi gong.

The author's discussion on the conceptual aspects of chi gung are particularly confusing, meandering and poorly reasoned.

There is some limited discussion of different types of chi gung and some limited discussion of how to practice chi gung. The practice material is insufficiently detailed or clear to be of much use. There are far more useful books available today about learning chi gung.

Apart from a few interesting stories about specific chi gung masters there is very little value to be found in this book.
