4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best live albums ever!!, September 22, 2005

If you don't know Don Dixon, it doesn't matter. If you have ever been in a situation where there was a live band playing that you never saw before, and wanted to get a recording of their set, this is it. The sound quality is excellent, the band has fun (their banter is here), and the songs are top-notch.

Don's throaty, hoarse, soulful voice really shines. The album is labeled as a budget show, but it is worth every penny. Recorded for a radio station, all the hits are here (for those of you who know Don or his band from NC, Arrogance).

As he himself states in the liner notes, "the mistakes are there..." including a missed verse, a few foul-ups in the lyrics, and some timing errors. But, compared to most live recordings today, which sound like the studio work with a crowd sound effect in the background, this is a real break from the norm.

You feel as if you were there on a Tuesday night in Chicago on March 22nd, 1988. Or at least wish you could have been...

4.0 out of 5 stars FUN!, January 30, 2007

Unlike most live disks, Dixon doesn't put out one that is overdubbed, remixed and marginalized within an inch of its life.

'Chi-Town Budget Show' is one thing most life disks aren't: FUN.

The songs are good, the playing is tight and gosh darn it, the band and audience actually seem to really be enjoying the show. Yes, the sound could be a little better and the band screws up now and again, but that is what makes the show so real...and good.

Best cuts for me are "Heart in a Box", "Your Sister Told Me", "Girls L.T.D.", "Cat Out of the Bag" and "February Ingeneue", but the entire disk is good. And fun.
