Book Description

Salvia hispanica, commonly known as chia, is a species of flowering plant in the mint family.

Chia is an ancient seed that dates back to over 5000 years ago. Used in the diets of Aztecs, this seed was a main source of nutrition . The whole seed was used in daily meals, mixed with other food and emulsified with water as a fresh drink; ground to become flour as part of medicines; pressed to obtain oil and has even been used in cosmetic products as a healthy alternative for your skin.

Modern science has concluded that pre-colonial diets were by far better than those nowadays consumed in the same area, and chia, which survived only in small plots in steep mountain areas from the south of Mexico, Guatemala and Nicaragua, comes back five hundred years later to become again a protagonist of human nutrition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy Chia seed recipes April 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A very quick read.
There is an overview of the benefits of chia and a quick mention of the other uses both at the start and end of the book. There are some useful tips here.
There are some good recipes but so few.
It loses a star because it does not mention contra-indications are vital to consider, plus a dozen more recipes would have rounded the booklet fully to feel complete.
Note - this does need checking, but I was told that chia thins blood and therefore anyone receiving aspirin therapy or other blood thinning medications should be careful. I do feel a chat with the pharmacist, doctor, herbalist or some such would be prudent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Liked it, but saw some mistakes. November 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Overall this book was very helpful. Sadly, I noticed that there were some holes in the recipes. Particularly, the apple cinnamon muffin recipe didn't have any apples in it. I am an professional baker (though new to chia), so I was able to improvise, but this seems unacceptable for a recipe book designed for beginners.

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy Chia recipes September 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The title says it all, easy recipes using Chia seeds as an addition, a modifier or replacement. Since I am new to the chia world, I am in a steep learning curve. Still the recipes have given me ideas of how (and when) I may use Chia seeds.

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting April 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I never knew chia seeds were edible. Some good and simple recipes to try. However, it mentioned ina couple of places that it can be used as an egg replacer, but never mentioned how much too use as a substitute for one egg.
