Book Description

December 1, 2005
From its early beginnings as a 5th-century Lawa walled city through the recent boom in residential and commercial design, the temple-studded city of Chiang Mai has become an inspiration for architects and designers. Nestled in a mountain valley in Thailand’s far north, Chiang Mai has long been a haven for artists and artisans who have taken inspiration from Burmese, Chinese, northern Thai, Shan, Thai Lu, hill-tribe and European sources, then fused them into a uniquely Chiang Mai art and culture. This cross-fertilisation of ideas owes much to the city’s history as a vital midway point for mule caravan routes between China and the Gulf of Martaban; even with the demise of the caravan trade it has remained a major supplier of arts and crafts to the world.

Today, the city’s historic uniqueness of style merges with post-modernism and functionalism to respond to contemporary urban needs while maintaining a distinctly ‘Chiang Mai’ identity. With more than 300 stunning colour photographs and clear, concise text, Chiang Mai Style captures the essence of the city's eclectic yet distinctive architectural style. This book celebrates the architecture, interiors and crafts of Thailand’s second largest city. From the vernacular architecture of the traditional Lanna style to chic residences to luxurious hotels and spas, the essence of this fascinating city is revealed.

About the Author

Joe Cummings holds a master’s degree in Southeast Asian art history and has designed and built a house on Mexico’s Pacific coast. He is a prolific writer and has written or contributed to over 35 books on art, culture, design, food, language and travel. A full-time resident of Chiang Mai, he lives next to a 16th-century Lanna stupa.

About the photographer
Born in northern Italy, Luca I. Tettoni has spent nearly half his life in Asia. During the 1980s, his long association with Thailand resulted in the publication of a number of groundbreaking books on the country, including The Arts of Thailand and the best-selling Thai Style. His ability to discover and record ancient traditions and immutable aspects of Asia has been instrumental in creating awareness of traditional styles and values of these fast-changing societies. More recently, his work has been featured in a number of coffee-table books on spas, resorts and contemporary architecture.

More About the Author

Joe Cummings was born in New Orleans, and raised in California, France and Washington DC. In high school he developed a taste for rock guitar and subversive politics, playing in a succession of garage bands while publishing an underground newspaper. After he graduated from college, the Peace Corps granted his request to be posted to Thailand, where he served as an English lecturer at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology in Bang Mot, Thonburi. He later earned a master's degree in South Asian Civilization from the University of California at Berkeley, and was a scholar in residence at the East-West Center in Hawaii. His Thailand guide for Lonely Planet was the first guidebook to that country written in English since 1928. An instant success, it remains one of the bestselling guidebook ever published. He has authored over 35 other books, including coffeetable books, phrasebooks and travelogues. Joe has twice been honoured with the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Gold Award and is also a recipient of Mexico's Pluma de Plata (Silver Quill) for outstanding foreign journalism on Mexico. He never gave up the guitar, and continues to jam regularly at clubs in Thailand, where he makes his home.

5.0 out of 5 stars gorgeous book, February 26, 2011
This review is from: Chiang Mai Style (Hardcover)
Some beautiful imagery of Thai and general Asian decorating ideas can be found in this book. While many of the pictures focus on the architecture which one may not be able to create in one's own home, there are more than enough images that can inspire more practical ideas.

A photo essay of recent decorating style trends in Chiang Mai... Really a coffee table book about Thai Style Interiors with some historical text provided relating to Chiang Mai.

Not a guide book of the Lonely Planet type...
