If, like me, you are searching for the originals of the five hit singles that this pianist from San Antonio, Texas (born November 21, 1909) was associated with in one compilation - keep looking.

Glenn's career began as a member of a number of jazz/swing bands in Texas, and first appeared on disc with the Don Albert Orchestra in 1936. Five years later he found himself in California where, in 1944, he became a member of The Walter Johnson Trio. He had also found steady employment as a session pianist and the odd arranging gig, work that got him noticed by T-Bone Walker who had him play on his late 1947 recording at Black & White, Call It Stormy Monday (But Tuesday Is Just As Bad) - which peaked early in 1948 - but without billing.

Around the same time he had a contract of his own with Imperial Records where, also in late 1947, he cut a number of sides which were released under the billing Lloyd Glenn & His Joymakers. None charted - and needless to say, none are here either. A stint as A&R man at Swing Time Records began in 1949 (where a young Ray Charles would emerge in 1951) and, in 1950, had his name featured on a hit single for the first time when Blue Shadows surged to # 1 R&B that summer(where it remained for 4 weeks) billed as Lowell Fulson Featuring Lloyd Glenn At The "88" - with the flip, Low Society Blues, also charting at # 8 R&B months later in December on Swing Time 226.

Meanwhile, in November, Old Time Shuffle Blues was climbing to # 3 R&B billed as Lloyd Glenn with Th' Fulson Unit on Swing Time 237 b/w Sinner's Prayer. His final hit came in he spring of 1951 when Chica Boo went all the way to # 1 billed as Lloyd Glenn At The "88" on Swing Time 254 b/w Jungle Town Jubilee.

Four stars. There are flaws and weaknesses on some tracks. Lloyd Glenn doesn't consistently knock your socks off, but he is always competent, interesting, and fun. Glenn is part of piano jazz history with a style that is all his. Not quite immortal, to know Glenn broadens comprehension of blues piano. He remains influential.

I bought the CD for the title track 'Chica Boo', a great and unique tune. Thus, I am not disappointed. I hope the album gets rereleased (again). It's well-worth having around. When I'm browsing, often I see it, say to myself "Oh Yeah!", and put it on.

This was great for me as I am a striving piano player and I was looking for something that really shows Lloyd Glenn's style.
Kinda like the more famous Fats Domino
