5.0 out of 5 stars Great deal for Knives
Having once worked for the Vector/Cutco ripoff, I know a thing or two about knives. I've held every brand of high quality cutlery in my hands (Henkels, Sabatier, Wusthof, Cutco) and to tell you the truth, this French Chef's knife has the best balance of all of them.

Definately get the Insignia line instead of Walnut. Even if you like the look better, wood handles go...

2.0 out of 5 stars Problems with small knives
I think the knives are great, except that many of the small knife handles are cracked. I don't know if it would cause a problem, but I don't like to buy new things that appear broken. I e-mailed Chicago Cutlery customer service and after three messages and waiting over a week they suggested I call a number they gave me. Well it was too late, the knives had already been...

Even if you like the look better, wood handles go bad, absorb bacteria, and aren't dishwasher safe.

Some points to consider before buying these knives: though the handle is not ergonomically fitted to your hand, the blanance is exquisite, so there isn't much of a concern there. The knives all have straight edges, which means that you will have to sharpen them. This isn't such a big deal, since you have to sharpen ANY knives. I also noticed that a carving knife & fork are not included. No big deal there either, since you'll use those maybe twice a year, tops.

Anyway, this is a REALLY nice set of knives, espeically for this price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Knives, November 30, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Chicago Cutlery Insignia 10-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I have this set and I like it quite a bit. I prefer the bakelite handle with rivets to any other design (wood changes over time, regular plastic doesnt feel nearly as nice, and I don't care for the look of stainless handles).

I did not have a problem with cracked handles. I assume they will stay that way (I don't see how they could crack through normal use, since the blade is a full hilt design).

All these knives are straight edge (except the bread knife) with forged blades (better than stamped blades).

All in all a good set for people who don't want to spend lots of money on knives (like me).

I consider myself a savvy shopper and usually do my homework before making a purchase. This includes reading any reviews I can find. I read the ones posted here and I must admit I stewed over making this purchase for about a week and finally came to the conclusion that what was considered a "higher quality" or more expensive set of knives such as Henkel or Wustoff wasn't needed in our household. We are the average busy family with no more than 3 or 4 meals a week cooked here. Thus, eliminating the need to spend more money. I have always considered Chicago Cutlery to be quality in my book, and I am very pleased with my purchase. I also want to note that I didn't have the problem with the cracked handles as some reviewers had stated. They were just fine, and I love being able to throw them in the dishwasher!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Knives at a Fair Price, July 3, 2001

These knives are a value for the price. They are well balanced and have a nice grip, and provide a fair quality at a fair price. I also like the bakelite handles that are dishwasher safe.

I e-mailed Chicago Cutlery customer service and after three messages and waiting over a week they suggested I call a number they gave me. Well it was too late, the knives had already been packed up and returned. I also noticed the same problem on the same small knives for sale in one of their factory stores.

4.0 out of 5 stars A WORKING KNIFE SET - NO MATTER HOW YOU SLICE IT!, July 9, 2002
This review is from: Chicago Cutlery Insignia 10-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
There are many things in our kitchen upon which we've come to depend, and this Chicago Cutlery knife set is right at the top of that list.

First of all, it comes with a handsome and handy wood block for easy knife storage. We keep it right by our chopping block.

The knives, with Bakelite handles, are well balanced and well made with stainless steel rivets holding the knives to their handles.

Perhaps the most used are the parer and the utility knife. The sizes of both are easily manageable, and they are comfortable to hold for long periods of use.

These are cutting edge items at a reasonable price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great knife, but quality it ain't, April 7, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Chicago Cutlery Insignia 10-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I made the mistake of purchasing this knife set before I read the reviews listed here. Like several others, three of my knives had cracks in them near the rivets. In addition, there were obvious quality concerns in the construction of the knives. That's why I packed up these knives and sent them back to where I purchased them. In spite of obvious flaws, they are good knives and extremely well balanced, although I would have preferred a more ergonomic handle (it's kind of thin). In fact, I saw a Chicago Cutlery Centurion three knife gift set (same knives, different name) at [a local store] for [a low cost], so I purchased it. These knives had no cracks and clearly had higher quality construction. I guess they save the lower quality knives for their sets.

3.0 out of 5 stars beautiful knife block set, cracked handles, February 10, 2002

I always considered Chicago Cutlery as a high quality manufacturer. I thought this particular set was very attractive. The knives offer a nice balanced feel with a thick bolster and full tang. However, 5 of the 7 knives had a very obvious split/crack in the handles.
I noticed someone else had this same complaint in the reviews but I still opted to buy the set. I was dismayed to discover the same defect. The defect may not take away from the functionality, but it certainly takes away from its appearance!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy from Amazon, December 23, 2005
This review is from: Chicago Cutlery Insignia 10-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I ordered this item Dec 15 and it will not be delivered until Feb 9. The information above is deceiving about when it will be shipped to you. Just giving you a warning so you don't have to go through as much of a hassle as I have.
