Handles Crack,

This review is from: Chicago Cutlery Insignia 4-Piece Steak Knife Set (Kitchen)
The handles have cracked after 3 trips in the dishwasher, guess I'll see how good the warranty is...

expected better,

These are the worst steak knives I have ever purchased. The tips of the knives have actually broken off 3 of 4 knives, and the blades have rusty spots on them. Even though the price was relatively low compared to "top of the line" knives, I expected more from a name like Chicago Cutlery.

Good knives, great value,

For the price, these are fantastic knives. I've had no problems with them at all - and they're quite sharp. Best not to put in the dishwasher. They will rust if water stands on them, and the handles don't respond well to the dishwasher. The blades are thick and sturdy, unlike many steak knives in this price range. Treat them right and they will last! I'd buy them again.

Don't abuse them,

Good knives should NEVER be put through the dishwasher. Also, good knives should be DRIED immediately. Since good knives are made out of STEEL, they can rust if abused.

Total Junk,

This review is from: Chicago Cutlery Insignia 4-Piece Steak Knife Set (Kitchen)
I own a set of the walnut tradition from Chicago Cutlery and have been very happy with them. I wanted something I could put through the dishwasher, so I ordered these, thinking the quality would be on par with my other knives.Mine didn't even make it to the dishwasher - all 8 that I ordered had cracked handles upon delivery. On top of that they were pretty dull - nothing like my walnut handled chicago cutlery knives....

Very balanced and easy to cut. No serrated edges that tear the meat. Very well worth the money.

a little too thin and flexible,

These are fine edge knives with a steel bolster and a riveted, full tang--all very good. The materials are certainly good enough given the price point. However, they are cheaply made: the edge grinding is cosmetically uneven, and there are obvious grinding marks where the tang and handle plastic were smoothed together. I am also plenty willing to forgive that at this price point.
I only wish the blades were a little thicker. They are very flexible, and I worry that someone will break one trying to cut steak off a bone. I have had a set for four years, and I have no problems with rust (I always hand wash and dry and store in a knife block). No problems with handle cracking as others have reported--maybe that's related to washing in a dishwasher, which I would recommend against. Resharpening is easy with a diamond sharpening steel.

I have many higher end, expensive knives with ice hardened steel that I cherish ...however, I was looking for a set of decent steak knives that wouldn't break the bank....AND keep a good edge. These are probably one of the best value per dollar items in their price range. Forged, hardened steel, (tho not ice hardened) a bolster and full tang...all at a reasonable price! I use a professional electric sharpener on all my knives....so I don't know if those of you with just a sharpening steel will have as good an edge lasting on "your" knives. Bottom line, from my position....I did a lot of research on reasonably priced steak knife sets that met the above conditions and after multiple months of usage I have no regrests with these knives. Do keep your knives in a wooden block and PLEASE hand wash and dry them quickly, remember to sharpen them regularly....if you follow these steps you will have many good years from all your knives.

Dishwasher???,

I bought a set of these in May of 2001. When I looked for a set for my daughter in November of 2004, I was surprized at the negative reviews. It's true that they're not great knives, but they certainly are very good knives.
It's unfortunate that Mr. Brack, the Amazon reviewer saw fit to mislead people about the care of them. Dishwashers are ultimatly harmful to any decent cutlery. |
