The knives are of good quality, however the boning knife was missing from the order. I am not happy with the customer service.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Starting Set, November 24, 2001

I recently purchased this set after spending several weeks trying to decide which set was right for me. Not a chef, just a regular guy who likes to cook. I looked at several competators and decided that, for the price, this set was the best one out there. I've had the opportunity to use most of the knives at this point and I find that they keep their edge very well and are extraordinarily easy to clean up. They have a nice heft to them and the handles seem to be just the right size. The only drawback that I see is that I would have preferred an 8" chefs knife instead of the 6" that comes with the set. Overall excellent for the price and an absolutely sufficient set for novice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality at a Bargain Price, March 15, 2006

I needed a new knife set to replace a jumble of mixed knives collected over the years, most of them not very good. But the fancy German brands were outrageously over priced. One of the few good knives I had was a Chicago Cutlery boning knife, It is very sharp, well made and filets a fish cleanly. So, when I saw this set of forged (not stamped) knives at a price below a single one of those German treasures, I tried it. And I am not disappointed! The workmanship is top rate, the blades razor sharp and the grip and feel is excellent. Construction is full tang, brass rivets and walnut grips. The finish is polished and smooth. Add the boning knife and you have everything at the price of one of those other brands.

Very impressive set. Excellent quality, sturdy, good value for dollar spent, and offers a nice assortment of knives for general kitchen use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for the price, March 20, 2007

I may have the older version which includes 8" Chef's knife instead of the 6" (I've had these knives for almost 2 years). The finish and the feel is not as good as my henckels 4 star, but for the price they cut very well. They are also easy to sharpen.

Recieved the product ahead of schedule, which was a suprise since I opted for the free shipping option. The knives are of reasonably good quality, My only real complaint is that the wood in the handles is not particularly well finished. I know I can't expect Rolls Royce for Chevy prices, however they should have stepped to the next finer grade of sandpaper at least. Aside from that complaint, they all arrived nicely sharp and the steel appears to be of good quality, if not overly polished. Fuctionally they handle well and seem to hold an edge reasonably well(time will tell). The block is of decent quality, not great, but decent. Asthetics aside you will have to spend quite a bit more to beat these knives. I have some Henkels (5 star) single knives, aside from better finish, they aren't a huge jump except in price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality requires care, October 17, 2007

This is the third set of knives that I have owned in the last 7 years. Hands down, this set is the most balanced. The full tang makes for a balance point right at the base of the blade in each piece. The blades hold an edge relatively well. Bare in mind that I have not gone through a cycle of resharpening them as of yet. It has only been a few weeks.

The walnut handles are not perfectly smooth, which I prefer. The slightly rough texture makes for better handling, especially when working while one has wet hands.

There is one VERY important thing to remember about a set of stainless steel knives; DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE DISHWASHER! Also, do not let them soak in water, rust spots can and will develop under these circumstances. I recommend washing them by hand with a gentle scrub sponge (blue surface). Dry the blades immediately after washing and wipe any excess water from the handles. Lay the knives flat on a counter or other such flat surface until the handles have completely dried before placing them back into the block.

As I stated at the beginning of this review, this is my third set in 7 years. So far, it is the best and it was also the least expensive. Remember that quality is not always a function of price!

I recently purchased the 9 pc. set. They are eveything I expected. Nice and sharp resharpen well and affordable. I see reviews from people who are compaining that the tips broke, or there not what we really expected, yada yada yada! There not meant to be used as a screw driver. If your looking for a good set that works well buy them. I also bought the 6 pc steak knive set, again pleased. If your trying to inflate your ego or impress the jones with the fanciest set in town maybe you should pass. Like joe walsh put it, "Just an ordinary average guy". Thats what kind of people buy this product.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware the scissors!, January 3, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Chicago Cutlery Walnut Forged 9-Piece Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
We are enjoying the knives and have no complaints ... but the scissors are the kind that you can separate the blades. I guess that's for better cleaning. However, the scissors can easily come apart in your hands if you are a little clumsy. Three times we have had half a scissor take a half gainer into our kitchen floor. Luckily the cats were not prowling below each time. We have gone back to our screwed-together scissors, which fit quite nicely in the scissors slot of the block.
