3.0 out of 5 stars Good but can't cut bones
This scissors cut all the skin and meat well but can't even break the bone of roast chicken. It is acceptable scissors for its price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best in the West, November 6, 2004
This review is from: Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition Kitchen Scissors, Brown (Kitchen)
These shears are tough, versatile, and handsome. They take apart so they are easy to clean. They have a notch on the blades to capture bones or other hard stuff, like rose stems. They have a can opener and flat screw-driver-type extension on the handle. Quality shears.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not wooden handles...but that's a good thing, February 12, 2007
This review is from: Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition Kitchen Scissors, Brown (Kitchen)
I have had these shears for 7 or 8 years now.

One important thing to note: they have NO WOOD on them. That's actually a good thing, because wooden-handled scissors wouldn't be nearly as durable or versatile - if you trim chicken with your kitchen shears as I do, you want them to be plastic-handled for cleaning purposes. I don't have a dishwasher, so I always hand washed these.

They are called "Walnut Tradition" because they match the Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition wood-handled knives in appearance - Amazon just needs to correct their desciption. The handles are brown plastic...not pretty, but practical.

Now, as for quality - these arrived nice and sharp. After several years of service, they have dulled significantly, and are now on their way to the garbage. I was very, VERY hard on these shears - opening taped-up boxes with them, using them as my ONLY pair of scissors for a couple of years, etc...so I think they lasted very well, considering. Had I ever sharpened them, they may have lasted even longer. I am ordering another pair now!

BIG PLUS: They come apart easily for cleaning...you do NOT want kitchen shears that don't come apart! Ick...can you imagine bits of chicken or goo from some sauce pouch you've cut open getting stuck in the joint? Yuck! These scissors just come apart, you clean and dry them, pop them back together, and they never get gross or rusty. I never had a problem with them not fitting back together tightly, even after several years of heavy use.

Overall, a good value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected, November 10, 2006
This review is from: Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition Kitchen Scissors, Brown (Kitchen)
We bought these shears because we needed to spend a few more dollars to get a discount on something else. I didn't really need them, but I knew I could always use them. Well, they are now my favorite kitchen shears. They're sturdy, sharp, and easy to clean. I would definitely recommend them.

4.0 out of 5 stars No wood content., November 3, 2006
This review is from: Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition Kitchen Scissors, Brown (Kitchen)
I keep seeing that these are "wood handled" with "rivets". They are not. The handles are molded plastic. This is clearly visible in the picture, and I've used them personally at work.

This does not at all decrease the quality of the item, as it's a great buy, but I felt this correction needed to be noted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted, January 19, 2012

I've had a couple of pairs of these shears in my kitchen drawer for years, and I use them routinely. When I realized that neither of my grown sons had a decent pair or kitchen shears, I looked for some to give them for Christmas. Couldn't find these in a store, so shopped online and found them here. These shears do just about everything, and I'd have been disappointed to have to settle for anything else.

4.0 out of 5 stars Would repurchase., November 21, 2011

I'm not crazy about the plastic brown handle color but these come apart making them easier to clean. I also use the can opener and bottle cap opener in the design.

2.0 out of 5 stars Screwdriver and bottle opener extensions make them harder to use and less safe, July 7, 2009
This review is from: Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition Kitchen Scissors, Brown (Kitchen)
Brief assessment
----------------
The two handle extensions - screwdriver and bottle opener - add very little utility to the scissors and they interfere with the ease and efficiency of a scissors' main use which is cutting things.

After having these for about half a year I decided that I would prefer a traditional scissors design and I would avoid purchasing this design in the future.

Extended discussion
-------------------
One of these (different color) came with a Chicago Cutlery set. While the rest of the set is great, I have some SERIOUS issues with the scissors.

But, first, let me mention the good: they work quite well if handled carefully. I use them on light tasks such as cutting the plastic wrapping around Bologna packages and, sometimes, for cutting some of the more difficult to tear apart hard plastic that encases certain small items. They cut well.

Now, for the bad: the design is terrible. I understand the urge to differenciate one's product from everyone else's but...

- A screw driver attachment? It comes at the end of one of the handles and it serves no good purpose. First of all, it's only a 'flat' screwdriver so, if you need to handle a Phillips head you are out of luck. As for the flat-only extension, it's so big, it's probably too big for most screws. And, if you try to apply any torque by using the other handle for leverage you are likely to break or damage the scissors.

- A bottle opener? I understand that some kitchen enthusiasts may be beer drinkers but, seriously, do we really want to encourage drinking while cutting? And who would feel like reaching for the scissors when a beer bottle needs to be opened?

Both of these enhancements add features that most of us would not expect or demand in a pair of kitchen scissors. They would be harmless and probably ignored if they didn't actually interfere with the way one would use the scissors. More than once, while cutting something, I found my pinky right between the screwdriver and the bottle opener extensions and, had I been done the cutting after a couple of beers, I could have ended up with a crushed pinky bone.

In addition, the 2 blades sometimes separate while cutting. This is supposed to be a feature meant to facilitate cleaning but I would prefer scissors that can hold themselves together. They also tend to rust. After a few months of use, rust spots became visible.

I can't recommend these and I have replaced these scissors with an older, traditional pair in my Chicago Cutlery set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best kitchen shears EVER!, December 27, 2008

I use kitchen shears for a lot of tasks in the kitchen - and over the years I have purchased many brands. I found these years ago in a store, and when they finally were dull I was so upset. Then I found them on Amazon - and I ordered three pairs - two for me and one for a gift. They come apart so you can clean them easily - I now do them by hand to lengthen their life (the dishwasher kills the edge on scissors as well as knives) - and I keep two pairs in the drawer at all times. I highly recommend them!

They work great, are sharp and perfect for cutting chicken breasts. I wish they didn't come apart though, otherwise, perfect.
