I either own or have gotten from the library every walking guide to Chicago. Despite its age, this book and the AIA Guide to Chicago are my favorite sources for interesting Chicago neighborhood walks. This book has an excellent listing of the interesting buildings in the neighborhood with a brief description and history of each, and is a good compromise between the comprehensive detail of the AIA Guide to Chicago and the many other walking guidebooks which don't have enough information and too short walks. Unfortunately this book is too big to fit in a pocket, so I either copy the relevant pages or carry it in a pack.

I have an earlier edition of this book. When our family from France came to visit, they were fascinated with it. I was really pleased to find a later edition and send it to them as a gift. They have passed it on to their brother the architect who is now planning a visit to Chicago. The book does a great job at highlighting several neighborhoods of Chicago, not just the Loop. The maps are clear even for non English speakers.

I own an earlier version of this book and still use it, though I should probably try to replace it with the more recent edition. This is a well-organized book that provides a guide for long walks through many of Chicago's neighborhoods, for the specific purpose of observing and learning about Chicago's architecture. Some walks are organized by street: Wacker Drive, for example, or North Wabash Avenue. Others are organized by neighborhood: the Gold Coast, for example, or Hyde Park. There are many photos pointing out architectural details. Using this book is a fun experience!
