Get the Online edition instead,
This review is from: The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition: CD-ROM for Windows (CD-ROM)
While the CMOS CD-ROM has good intentions, it has quickly been out-paced by the online version of the Manual that was launched just after the CD appeared.
The CD does not work with Vista or Macs and I recommend skipping it all together and going online. [...]

The online version is updated continuously and is searchable; you can create and save your own style sheets; and the $30 yearly subscription includes access to an ever-expanding Q&A section that frequently clarifies things not explicitly covered in the manual. The only reason I would bother with a CD version at all would be if I were working while away from the internet for long enough to have this pay for itself.

Great Product,

CMoS CD-ROM DOES work with Vista. I called the publisher before ordering to make sure. Received the disc and installed without any issues.
This version may not be as up-to-date as its online counterpart, but it's a one-time investment and can be used when an Internet connection is not available.

NOT COMPATIBLE with Windows Vista!,

This is ridiculous! CMoS wrote in an e-mail today:
"[...] The CMOS CD Rom is not compatible with Vista. We recommend that customers using Vista look at our online product [...]" Thus, the CMoS CD-ROM of the 15th edition is NOT COMPATIBLE with a system that has been on the market for more than three years now. Other publishers launched recommended patches for Vista as early as in 2006! I get the feeling that CMoS just wants to sell their overprized online version. This is bad business behavior!

I have found it helpful. I work from two different places, depending on my assignment. I have the hard copy in one place and the CD-ROM in another. I know the CMS like the back of my hand anyway, but being able to type in a word and go straight to the particular article makes it very quick for me when I need to cite the particular article numbers for changes that I mark.

If you work with words, this is a reference book you must own. If you work with words on a computer, The CD-ROM version of the 15th edition is a must.
Publishing has changed dramatically and the Manual has changed with it. The editors promise that every aspect of their coverage has been examined and updated. In addition to books, the Manual also provides guidelines for journals and electronic publications. The CD-ROM version, I am told, is great. Searches are easy. Updated approximately once a decade, the 15th edition is the most significant revision I can remember. There is a new chapter on American Grammar usage and usage. Design and manufacturing coverage has been streamlined to reflect current procedures. If you are looking for clear, concise advice, the 15th edition is reference stylebook on CD-ROM is for you. |
