If you are into slick, well-produced music cranked out by a tightly-knit blues combo, you will not like this CD at all. The band on this CD blazes through these tunes with an enthusiasm that is really catchy, but they sure do miss some notes and some timing cues along the way. The sound of Yank's electric mandolin is so piercing that it is really unsettling at times, but, once you hear it, you will want to hear that strange sound again and again. This is the real blues: hard-edged, expressive, unpolished, and unadorned. Most of all, this is a fun listen.

I moved to Chicago too late to see Yank but listening to this CD reminds me of why I love the blues. Many if not all of these songs have been recorded many times over but Yank makes them his with his own feel and a great band featuring Odie Payne on drums. Check out "Early in the Morning" it's worth the money just for that song.

Even though I am a long-time fan of the blues, the Chicago blues in particular, I may never have heard of Yank Rachell had I not heard a John Mayall cover of the Eric Bibb song Kokomo that mentions him. So I looked up Rachell here on amazon and was intrigued by what I learned of him. You have to start somewhere, so I started with Chicago Style.
That turned out to be a good choice since this album well exhibits Rachell's exciting approach to the blues. His mandolin truly shakes things up and breathes new life into a clutch of venerable blues standards.
I like the whole album for the most part but to me, the standout cuts are the humorous Depression Blues; Roll Me Over Baby, which has been much covered under a variety of names; Check Up On My Baby; Let Me Tangle In Your Vines; and I Don't Believe You Love Me No More.
If you haven't heard Rachell before and are open to an unusual approach to the blues, then you should hear Chicago Style. The CD comes with an insert that contains minimal album information and an interesting mini-bio of Rachell. The price is right, so you can't go wrong.
