Since 1850, Chicago has felt the benefits of a vital Italian presence. These immigrants formed much of the unskilled workforce employed to build up this and many other major U.S. cities. From often meager and humble beginnings, Italians built and congregated in neighborhoods that came to define the Chicago landscape. Post-World War II development threatened this communal lifestyle, and subsequent generations of Italian Americans have been forced to face new challenges to retain their ethnic heritage and identity in a changing world. With the city's support, they are succeeding.

"ITALIANS IN CHICAGO" is part of the book series IMAGES OF AMERICA. The book is a compilation of old photographs that capture the Italian migration of the early 1900's and the life styles of the newly settled immigrants in Chicago. The importance of family, neighborhood and church in establishing a new found Italian-American community is captured pictorially throughout the book. Photographs from the various conclaves of Italians on the north, west and south sides are presented. Although the conclaves are dispersed throughout the city a common cultural uniformity can be seen to develop. The book is a valuable supplement to any serious research on the history of Chicago.

This is a really awesome book! I was hoping it would be interesting and not too dull, but it is fascinating and I am enjoying it far more than I expected! The detail is great, it is very readable, more story-like than just facts and figures which is more what I was expecting. I would highly recommend this book to those interested not only in Italians, but in Chicago history in general.
