Southern Funk, July 9, 2009
This review is from: Chicas Malas (Audio CD)
`Chicas Malas' by Ashville, NC singer/songwriter Jar-e provides a diverse listen incorporating South American influences into a tasty jazz/funk/soul stew. The album begins with the tight "Fever Break" featuring a sublime Fender Rhodes before segueing into the singsong jazz of "Heyday." The warm and funky "3 Leaf" feels like it could have been an unreleased b-side recently unearthed from the Stax vaults. "Casa Believe" offers a diversion in bossa nova that rivals some of the south of the border explorations by Sting.
The majority of the music on this upbeat yet concise album is exceptionally well played and unafraid of cutting loose. Jar-e does not tread into jam band territory, however it is easy to see that many of these songs could be expanded into long interludes when played live. Jar-e is a refreshing new musician, and one who deserves broader exposure.
