3.0 out of 5 stars good ride
My 2.5 year old loves this toy. She rides it all over the basement and driveway and is able to steer it. I bought it for the 1 year old who does enjoy opening up the seat storage and stashing things inside, climbing on and off the seat and playing with the various levers and buttons that make a variety of fun noises. I am sure she will really like it more as soon as...

We got this for my 10 month old son who is showing an interest in pushing things around and pulling up on furniture. Therefore I really appreciated the advice of another reviewer to put ankle weights in the middle compartment to keep the train from tipping over. That being said my son truly enjoys everything about this train. I really debated on this purchase because I did not know which push and ride toy to purchase or if it would really be used. I almost bought the one by Little Tikes but after reading all the reviews I decided to go for this one once I found it available with free shipping from Baby Universe. Also the fact that this one seems to be a little higher off the ground is good for my son whose height is in the 90th percentile. My son also enjoys the different levers and knobs which I also enjoy since they don't require batteries! I do agree with another reviewer that a brake would be a nice addition for when my son is "working on the train". I like the fact that this ride on toy steers very well since we have an octagon shaped living room. Obviously that may not be a concern for a lot of people. I can also see the point of the argument for a push toy that stays on a straight path but my son mainly uses it on carpet which slows the turning down when the toy is pushed.

Update: My son is now 2 1/2 and this has remained in his most played with toy collection. He now picks this over any other ride on to push around and play "crash" with. It has taken quite a beating and still looks brand new. Since it enables him to steer the train he prefers this one since he doesn't have to pick it up to turn it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Ride On!, August 13, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Chicco Toys Play 'N Ride Train - Colors May Vary (Toy)
This was my son's Santa gift for Christmas. He was an early walker and 10mo old when he got it. He loved it from day one and pushed it all over. Since then he has learned how to ride it and one of his favorite things is to put things in the seat and push it around. He also love to sit on it and chase the dogs around. At 18mo old this is still one of his favorite toys and is standing up well to my son's constant use and abuse (he does stand on it and sit on it while its on its side). I love to find toys that don't flash and make noise. I think toys like this one encourage more imaginative play. The levers and stuff do reward exploration with spinning, squeaking and simple reactions. This is very sturdy and my son doesn't have any problems with it tipping over. This is definately one of our favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best money we've spent on a toy, September 3, 2005

My 2-year-old son loves ride-on toys - we have three different ones at home and he's ridden on lots of others at friends' houses. This is hands-down the best ride-on toy I've seen. It's just the right height, very durable and easy to roll and steer. It has some nice little gadgets to play with, but nothing electronic or annoying. He started using it at age 1 and I've had friends' kids up to age 3.5 use it with no problem. We even bought one for both of the grandparents' houses because it's something he can use for a couple of years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, Well-Built Toy, June 14, 2006

My daughter loves this toy. At different times, she's enjoyed each of the different features. Right now, she likes opening up the seat & pretending to take something out & giving it to us. We got the train for her when she was 11 months. She started out pushing it around & now rides it all over the place. At 17 months, she doesn't quite understand the steering part, but I like that it poses a challenge for her & will grow w/her. This toy is extremely well-made, & I love that it was pre-assembled. When I researched riding toys, I read of many headaches that were brought on by trying to assemble other ones.
1/13/10 Update: My daughter, now 5y.o., still uses this on occasion! It's probably because the steering is amazing--she "corners on rails." Granted, the push button thing on the steering wheel with the balls broke long ago, but now it's used to hold little toys as she tools around the house. Other than that, it's very durable. I can easily ride on it at 5'4" & 100++ pounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teach 'em to walk, July 16, 2007

I'd like to start my review by spreading the word I read here - If you tape some small weights inside the seat of this toy it will make it much sturdier. I put 20lbs of dumbbells in there when my daughter was first learning how to pull up so it wouldn't fall over on her.

This toy was the catalyst that propelled my 11-month old baby to be an 11-month old toddler. She learned to walk by pushing on this toy. The first time she pulled herself up with this toy and walked unassisted my knees were like jello, as if it was me learning to walk for the first time!

My daughters older cousins come over and play with this toy too. It's a very good value.

I purchased this toy for my son's first birthday. He is a bit too young to ride on it yet, but he enjoys playing with all of the other bells and whistles. He also enjoys putting things in the seat compartment and then finding them again! As a walking toy, it seems very fast, although he is not walking yet and we have mostly hardwood floors. I would recommend this toy; Chicco seems to make a very solid product. An added bonus, his nearly 5 year old brother LOVES it too, so they play with it together.

I bought it for the 1 year old who does enjoy opening up the seat storage and stashing things inside, climbing on and off the seat and playing with the various levers and buttons that make a variety of fun noises. I am sure she will really like it more as soon as she is able to push better with her feet to move it along. My older child has even given her little sister a ride. If you have slim kids, there is enough room for them to both sit on the seat. The seat back support is removeable; it just slides into place with no screws to secure it. This is a little frustrating for the kids, who try to pick up the train by the back support and then it comes off in their hands, leaving them unable to replace it in the "slots". That is a minor issue, however.

We got this train for my son when he was 10 mos. old (not even walking yet) and he is now almost 2 1/2 and still plays with it every day! This is some of the best money we've ever spent, especially on a toy. It is one of the first toys visiting kids play with and I am amazed at it's longevity. It still looks virtually brand new, too. Chicco makes very high quality products.

I would not recommend buying this product if you have hard wood floors. I wish I'd known that. It is a hit with my son in terms of pressing all the fun buttons and pushing it around. Problem is it is so lightweight he has fallen on many occasions and lost his footing. Best to use this product on carpet. Also I suggest putting ankle weights inside the middle compartment so that it doesn't fall over. It is not as sturdy as I thought. Also the handle on the back that allows baby to push the truck comes out too easily. It should have some kind of snap and lock feature.

PROS: You don't need batteries and it is one of the few toys that my son is entertained by

CONS: Too lightweight, falls over easy, handle comes out too easily

This was a present for our one year old grandson. However, our 3 year old granddaughter loves it two. They ride it together sometimes. Most little ones love trains. It is a great toy!
