Editorial Reviews

Review

Chicken Beaks: Growing Up Hispanic is a collection of vignettes that vividly captures the zeitgeist of mid-20th century New Mexico and the joys and struggles of a Hispanic family living in the small village of Nambé. New York Times

Ben Romero is an accomplished storyteller, spinning yarns rooted deeply in his childhood growing up in Nambé, an Hispanic community about 15 miles north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. This collection of 75 vignettes captures the magic and mischief of that childhood and harks back to simpler, more innocent times in a ay that charms the reader.

I read the book to my vision impaired husband and we laughed so hard we cried. He could see the kids' actions and the stories led to him telling me about his own childhood.
I would recommend the book to adults and children. Our grandson loved it.

This book is written by my father, so my opinion may be a bit biased, but I remember being told these stories as a child and it is so wonderful to have them in a format that I can pass on to future generations. My children are enchanted by these stories and I would recomend this book to anybody who likes some reality-based humor and a glimpse at a simpler time in the not so distant past.

i read these stories at the bus stop to my grandchildren as they are waiting to leave for school. they are great for discussion about behavior, living conditions, value, and family; because they have not experienced many of these situations. it is easy reading. i congratulate Mr Romero.

This was fun reading for my family. I have a large extended family that shares similarities with the author's stories. This book sparked many memories and stories. Thank you, Mr. Romero, for promoting a new level of bonding between our generations.
