5.0 out of 5 stars Luda is "Back For The Third Time"

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing that you haven't seen before
If you have Luda's first two album's, then there is really no reason to go get this one. For three cd's Luda does the same things over and over and over. If you like that go ahead and buy this, but if you're like me, don't bother.

From start to finish this cd feels exctly like the last two. It'll make you laugh at times, make you say whoa at times, and make you...

This review is from: Chicken N Beer (Audio CD)
After 2 solo offerings, (Back For The First Time and Word Of Mouf) and one CD with his crew DTP (Golden Grain), Luda is back with his 3rd solo disc, "Chicken And Beer". Kanye West and Luda produce the 1st single "Stand Up". This song is classic Luda and was the perfect choice to be the first single. If you haven't seen the video yet, you definitely need to watch BET or MTV 2 to try to watch it. "Chicken And Beer" starts out with the fast paced "Southern Fried Intro". Luda samples Isaac Hayes' "Walk On By" and gets his CD off to a good start. "Blow It Out" is produced by the same person who produced Nas' "Ether", Ron Browz. Luda always knows how to hook up the metaphors and he even has a little something for his adversary, Bill O' Reilly. The hook is nice and "Blow It Out" turns out to be one of the best songs on "Chicken And Beer". "Splash Waterfalls" is outright hilarious as Luda makes a whole song comparing line for line what the difference between a man that wants to make love with a woman and a man that wants to just have sex with a woman. You may think that this concept is stupid until Luda breaks it down for you. On "Hard Times" Eightball & MJG and Carl Thomas join Ludacris for one of the few serious songs on "Chicken And Beer". The combination definitely works as everyone breaks down how it wasn't always peaches and cream. Although the sample has been used quite frequently, Ludacris makes things work on "Diamond In The Back". Three 6 Mafia's DJ Paul and Juicy "J" produce the track and Luda has tight lyrics as usual. "Screwed Up" featuring Lil Flip pays tribute to DJ Screw, who was shot and killed. To anyone who doesn't know who DJ Screw is, he is well known for using a regular track and slowing the beat down and making mixtapes with the slowed down grooves. Lil Flip was featured on alot of those songs. Luda and Lil Flip go back and forth with the rhymes and "Screwed Up" is my favorite song on "Chicken And Beer" so far. "Hip Hop Quotables" is produced by Erick Sermon and has Luda rapping one verse altogether without a chorus. It works for Luda because the way he combines the metaphors and makes them humorous at the same time. "Hoes In My Room" features Snoop Dogg and will remind you of the song that is currently out with Chingy, Luda and Snoop called "Holidae Inn". Luda and Snoop tell a hilarious tale about them meeting some women at the hotel who turn out not to be as fine as they thought they would be and then at the end Luda and Snoop are saying that they were set up with the ugly women by Bill O' Reilly. This is my second favorite track on the CD. Overall, Luda has a winner with his third solo CD, "Chicken And Beer". The title may seem to be generic, but the quality of the material backed with the humorous metaphors and interludes will have you enjoying this CD as much as you did "Back For The First Time" and "Word Of Mouf". To anyone needing anymore Luda, he is on Big Boi's "Speakerboxxx" CD on "Tomb Of The Boom" and if you want "Act A Fool" the only way to get that song is by buying the "2 Fast 2 Furious" soundtrack.

James' Top 5

1) Screwed Up w/Lil Flip
2) Hoes In My Room w/Snoop Dogg
3) Stand Up
4) Diamond In The Back
5) Blow It Out

5.0 out of 5 stars The Block Got They Eyebrows Down..., October 26, 2003
This review is from: Chicken N Beer (Audio CD)
Ludacris, the ATL DJ turned rap phenomenon, drops his third highly anticipated album `Chicken & Beer'. After his earlier success with DTP leading the way on the 2 Fast 2 Furious soundtrack and the single `Act A Fool', Ludacris doesn't disappoint. Ludacris has the personality and charisma that makes him instantly likable. He has a different flow on each song and accentuates his WORDS to let you know he has confidence in his rhymes. And he should. Lyrically adept at talking about women and throwing game, and equally adept at dropping some fire for the underground. He was taken off the Pepsi contract earlier this year and one of his concerts was cancelled due to his `explicit lyrics'. He also had that surprise concert at Clark Atlanta University where they wouldn't let him curse. Eager to let out his anger, he bashes O'Reilly on several songs and has increased his tales about females.

You know Ludacris will get the clubs popping with anything he releases because he has so much energy. The Southern Fried Intro is just straight hotness. Ludacris gets with his double time flow on this and COMPLETELY RIPS IT. That's how you supposed to start off an album. Stand Up & P. Poppin (Luda used a House Party reference in there from Kid) are easily club bangers but other than that, there's not another club song. Surprisingly Ludacris laid it back a little on this album. These tracks are made for riding. `Hard Times' which features Eightball & MJG, Diamond In The Back ( which samples that William DeVaughn - Be Thankful ), Hip Hop Quotables (which screams Erick Sermon's signature style), and Teamwork are some chilled out tracks very different from anything Luda has previously done. He also has some gangsta tracks on here such as Eyebrows Down, and We Got, that has Chingy really ripping it, showing why he was signed in the first place (with production by DJ Paul). Splash Waterfalls is his song about the you know what. And it's really a great song. But they really show out on the pimpalistic `Hoes In My Room' which just HAD to feature Snoop. It just had to...the beat screams Snoop. And the chorus to this song is one of the catchiest of the year. You will definitely be singing along on this song. Another amazing song is Screwed Up feat. Lil Flip. This song has that syrupy Lil Flip Texas sound to it ( a little like a carnival or circus ) and once again the chorus is superior with the little `F You' chant.

Ludacris definitely delivers on this album. This album is currently tied with Back For The First Time as his best album. You can play this song all the way through just chillin and you ain't even gon have to change a track. The only letdown on this album comes from the skits that wish they were funny. Without those this album is the truth and I definitely recommend this one right here. Pick it up!

4.0 out of 5 stars Luda is great, dispite what haters say, May 23, 2004
By
This review is from: Chicken N Beer (Audio CD)
Ludacris is, judging by the reviews on the page, not very well liked. If you look through these reviews you will see a ton saying things like "mainstream rap is horrible",or "Ludacris dosnt deserve to stand behind a mic". Ingnore these statments, along with those of people like Bill O'Reilly who labeled Luda's lyrics as "irresponsible", and talked Pepsi out of signing an endorsment deal with him. Ludacris is an excellent musical talent dispite what these Hip-hop hating reviewers say. That being said, onto the album.
This album is fire. Hot tracks begining to end. It is full of catchy beats and great MC-ing. If you dont like some of the songs the first time around, give them another few listens as they are sure to grow on you. (I only liked "Stand Up" & "We Got" my first time through) This album is a difinite BUY in my opinion, especially for a Ludacris fan. It is not as good as "Word of Mouf", but it is still a great album.

Tracks:
1. Southern Fried 4.5/5 (Single) Very fast rap. Great Intro
2. Blow It Out 4/5 (Single) Very Catchy Beat & Diss to Bill O'Rielly
3. Stand Up 4.5/5 (Lead Single) Great Beat by Kanye West
5.Splash Waterfalls 5/5 (Single) One of my favorites another extremely catchy beat
6. Hard Times [ft 8Ball,MJG,& Carl Thomas] 4/5 Love 8Balls verse
7. Diamond in the Back 2/5 Dont care for this one (Be Thankful sample)
8. Screwed Up [ft Lil Flip] 2/5 Worst Song.Thought it would be better cuz it has Flip
10. P-Poppin [ft Shwanna & Lil Fate] 3.5/5 Another catchy one
11. Hip Hop Quotables 3.5/5 Very Colorful Rhymes make this song the best lyrically
13. Hoes In My Room [ft Snoop Dogg]3/5 Halarios diss to Bill O'Rielly & Ugly hoes
14. Teamwork 3/5 OK, not great
16. We Got [ft I20,TitiBoi&Chingy]5/5 WOW! This trak shows why Chingy was signed to DTP as he tears up the mic. Love Titi & Ludas verses too. BEST SONG ON CD.
17. Eyebrows Down 3/5 [ft TitiBoi & Dolla Boy] Looking forward to Titis solo album. (USA Titday)

4.0 out of 5 stars "Chicken-N-Beer", October 19, 2003

Jeff Wemers (ROck Island, Il) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chicken N Beer (Audio CD)
Ludacris is back for his third album, but his first as a well-known superstar. Now that Ludacris has become a household name, will his music match up with his last endeavors? Yes...and...no. I really like Ludacris and the CD "Chicken-N-Beer". There are some great songs to party to ("Stand Up"), some great songs that diss none other than Bill O'Reilly ("Blow it Out") and quite a few hilarious tracks ("Hoes in My Room"). But don't get too excited because while about ¾ of the tracks on this CD are as good as gold there are certain songs that seem more like filler than real Ludacris material ("Teamwork"). However, the couple bad apples don't spoil the whole bunch. Overall, if you like Ludacris or rap this CD is definitely worth buying. The lyrics are awesome and hilarious and the beats bump, but don't expect this CD to be better than Ludacris' previous effort "Word Of Mouf" or you will be disappointed. However, "Chicken-N-Beer" is definitely a nice addition to anyone's CD collection. "B"

4.0 out of 5 stars Where are the Dominoes??, November 11, 2003
By
This review is from: Chicken N Beer (Audio CD)
The name alone let's you know the agenda for this CD. This is for the fellas on Saturday afternoon chillin. The only thing he left out was the dominos and we would have been straight, This CD follows the pattern of "Word of Mouf" and gives you straight dirty south tracks. Luda is not a Gangsta rapper and unfortunately the playful nature of his lyrics aren't usually taken serious. But don't get it twisted. This dude is as creative as any rapper out there. He starts the CD with "Southern Fried", his "I'mdaschiznit" song of the CD. Nice guiter riffs on this song and his trademark Twista rapid flow.. 'Blow It Out" follows the Luda pattern of intro songs with metaphoric analogies, with a crazy hook(see "Go To Sleep" from the WORD OF MOUF CD). "Stand Up" is typical Luda first single, something catchy for the clubs but never his best material. Straight for the radio. I love the hook but that's where my attention drops on this cut. Track 6 "Hard Times" features 8 Ball and MJG. Really love this cut, especially 8 Balls verse. This is the Luda, "life is or was a biotch" portion of the CD. This cut is followed up by "Diamond In The Back". Another growin up in the hood cut. Sounds like something that should have came of the Fat Albert soundtrack or something. Luda really switches his flow up here. And of course the "Be Thankful" sample is nice. "Screwed Up" w/Lil Flip is a disappointment, just not feelin the song. Once you hear the chorus though you'll know you'll hear this song for a minute in the cars bumpin next to you at the stoplight. Track 10 "P-Poppin"....Man...the ultimate strip club cut. Shawna sounds really good on this track, as probably any female would based on the subject matter. At this point I loved the choice of the next track, "Hip Hop Quotable". The soul of this song is straight East Coast, which is a cool transition from the dirty dirty cut just previously played. Track 13 "H... in my room" is the comic relief of the CD. Perfect Luda/Snoop cut. "Teamwork" is his "freaky tales" collaboration to the CD. The flute sound effects are pretty cool. "Eyebrows Down" is his autobiographical cut. Pretty cool, from infancy to the present. Nice wrap up song. If you like Luda you'll love Chicken and Beer. Symbolically and literally.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too much Beer with that Chicken!, October 7, 2003
This review is from: Chicken N Beer (Audio CD)
This album starts off with a bang, the reason I bought it was because I heard Track # 1, SOUTHERN FRIED INTRO, on the radio. I was anticipating the album to have that hard explosive Ludacris sound he's known for. Track# 2 BLOW IT OUT is another head banger, that kind of music that makes you want to blow your speakers! Of course Track # 3 STAND UP, makes you stand up... Which is probably the reason why it is this albums introductary single. Ludacris then delivers his signature PIMPOLOGY lyrics in Track# 5 SPLASH WATERFALLS, and after you listen to it, it makes you understand why its called what it is, "think about it!"
I'll now skip to Track# 10 P-POPPIN, and if you don't watch BET UnCUT at night.... WATCH IT! YOU'll then understand why!
Thus, this album is a must get, the rest of the album songs that I did not list above will eventually grow in on you! CHICKEN & BEER is creative, origional, and features music only Ludacris can do!

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing that you haven't seen before, October 7, 2004
By
This review is from: Chicken N Beer (Audio CD)
If you have Luda's first two album's, then there is really no reason to go get this one. For three cd's Luda does the same things over and over and over. If you like that go ahead and buy this, but if you're like me, don't bother.

From start to finish this cd feels exctly like the last two. It'll make you laugh at times, make you say whoa at times, and make you skip to the next track sometimes. Actually you'll change tracks alot with this cd. Stand up and Blow it out may be the only tracks worth listening to more than once. "Hard Times" isn't bad but definetly not good either. While "P-poppin" & "Diamond in the back" are catchy at first, then got annoying. Still, buy the "Stand Up" single, and save yourself money.

Another thing, where are the beats with these album. It's like Luda half-heartly tried to release another cd. The beats for his first two ablums were fun. This album failed to do that. The beats aren't as fun or enjoyable as his last two. He failed to make a copy of his last two albums, that is sad.

This cd is okay to listen to,once, any more and it is just boring. This cd is a disappointment. Ludacris is no doubt a great entertainer, and defintly has a way with words. Though he is appearently unable to do anything new. He should quit while he's ahead.

If he releases a cd in the future, I hope that you proves me wrong. I hope you releases a cd that can stand up to Back for the First Time or Word of Mouf, but has a new sound to it. At least, If not, he should retire instead of digging a deeper grave for himself.
