Nice Stories, but not much substance.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Chicken Soup for the Christian Soul: Stories to Open the Heart and Rekindle the Spirit (Chicken Soup for the Soul) (Paperback)
I did enjoy this book, and there were some really moving stories and some funny stories, but i didn't find it too terribly filling. Honestly, i personally can't say i'd recommend it. The problem i had with it is that it lacks substance. The stories, while are mostly very nice, do not even attempt (for the most part) to tell the Gospel. And (too) many of the stories had themes that were doctrinally and biblically unsound. I am critical only because it is named "Chicken soup for the CHRISTIAN soul." As a book, it does not bring forth a world view that is terribly Christian. I believe a more apt title would have been "Chicken soup for the God-believing soul." Some may not see a difference, but it's definately there..."Do you still think it's enough just to believe that there is one God? Well, even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror!" James 2:19 (NLT) I think a MUCH better book is Joni Earickson Tada's "When God Weeps." That book is also quite moving, but it also contains much Godly wisdom, and makes a conscious effort to show what the bible says about life and death and suffering.

Chicken Soup for the Chrisitian soul is a collection of 101 short stories written by a variety of authors. The book is similar to the Chicken Soup for the Soul, except there are Christian values and beliefs woven into the book. The book really helped me learn how to show Christ in my life, whether it be at school, work, or anywhere. The book had many great stories. One of my favorite stories was The Bible. It is about a young man about to graduate from high school. All of the grads normally get cars as their gifts so he was expecting one. He went out with his father and found a car. He was very excited when the day of graduation came. His dad gave him his present, which was a bible. The boy threw it down and ran out. They never spoke again. Almost 40 years later the boy recieved a phone call that his dad had died. He went home to sort through his dad's belonging. While he was there he found the Bible that his dad gave him. He opened it and there was a check for the exact amount of the car. That story along with many others had a theme. When I was feeling low in my faith I read stories of how people deepened theirs. Reading how others were in the same situation as me help to encourage me. There is a story for every mood and everyday. There are stories on parents and teens fighting. Most teenagers have problems with their parents and sometimes both the parent and the teen feel alone. The book is a good reminder that others are going through the same things. There are stories about miracles if you are feeling like God is missing from your life. The stories taught me how to pick God out of days or even a situation. There are not only stories there are also jokes and comics. There is a whole section called on the lighter side, which is very funny. There are stories on every topic of life. There are stories that will make you cry, laugh, rejoice, and just smile. The book changed the way I look at life, family, friends, and most importantly God. The book opened my eyes to all the little acts of kindness that I sometimes over look. "This will lead you to forgive others for their trespasses asnd yourself for your shortcomings" The book is for everyone.

This book is a collection of some of the most moving stories I have ever heard. Many times I was brought to tears by the heart-warming compassion shown in these examples of God's grace and Jesus' love. Knowing that there are others in the world who feel the way I do about God and hearing what they have to say has helped me to become stronger in my faith.

My father died about a month ago and I was looking for a book that was comforting and uplifting. I came across this book and it was perfect! There are so many wonderful stories! If you are going through any problems right now, I would highly suggest this book as a source of comfort.

This is a nice book -- but I, myself, much prefer the earlier books. Most, if not all, of these stories appear to be reprinted from the earlier books -- making this a waste of money if you already own the others. Likewise, many of these stories are nothing special, and appear to have been included solely because of their Christian emphasis ... I, myself, would have much preferred a shorter book comprised of meaningful stories, rather than one padded to make it bigger. Personally, I much prefer the earlier Chicken Soup books, and strongly recommend buying them, instead ... If you want an inspirational Christian book, there are plenty much better than this one.

When I began reading this book I was a bored, depressed atheist studying the Bible for its historical significance. Now I'm a happy Born-Again Christian, largely due to this excellent book! Christian or Jew, you'll love it!

Chicken soup sure does it! This is chock full oflife-affirming nuggets that warm the heart whatever religion. Thelast time I read such a positive presentation of Spirit in our daily lives was when I read Richard Patton's "The Autobiography of Jesus of Nazareth and the Missing Years" - which, if you haven't read it, is a MUST! "Chicken Soup" is down to earth, get yer fingers dirty Spirituality. It is a memory landmark like the Kennedy Assassination - you always remember where you were when you first read it. The writing style is unassuming and therefore easilly digestible. Very recommended.

These stories helped to enlighten my soul like no other publication that I have ever read. The flow of emotions in my body as I read each story brought a certain sorrow and joy to me. The stories of lost love and friendship greatly affected me. I felt like I could relate to these people, like I have had the same emotions that they are experiencing in their time of pain. I have been through some tough times, and it makes me feel better to know someone else has too.

I really enjoyed the first Chicken Soup books and the stories were warm and fuzzy -- good falling asleep or bathroom reading.....This series, in it's quest to maximize its' fad-like shelf-life, has lapsed into cheesy, moralistic garbage. I admit that I didn't finish the book, but I did not find myself moved, and felt that the book was quite manipulative. Chritianity has better forums than this.
