Book Description

May 1, 2009 4 and upP and up
Rumor has it that Mrs. Farmer is making chicken soup, so the chickens are on the run—except for poor Little Chickie, who has a bad cold. No matter where she hides—the hayloft, a milk pail, or the sheep pen—her sneezes give her away. She is sure to be found soon!

The unbeatable mother-son team of award-winning and bestselling author Jean Van Leeuwen, whose Oliver and Amanda Pig books are a children’s literature staple, and her son, up-and-coming illustrator David Gavril (Penelope Nuthatch and the Big Surprise), have created a charming picture book very much in the spirit of Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

When the news reaches the henhouse that Mrs. Farmer has taken out the “BIG POT” to make chicken soup, the residents are all aflutter and rush to hide, except Little Chickie, who has a cold in her beak. Each place Little Chickie finds to hide (the hayloft, the milk pail, the sheep’s wool, etc.) causes her to sneeze and expose her and the others. As the “CLOMP, CLOMP, CLOMP” of Mr. Farmer’s boots indicates that he is getting closer to finding the main ingredient for the soup, the chickens scramble to find new hiding places. Eventually, Mr. Farmer catches Little Chickie, and the final page reveals that it is vegetable soup that Mrs. Farmer has made—to treat Little Chickie’s cold. Uncluttered cartoon drawings made with pen, pencil, and watercolors humorously portray the chickens scurrying from each hiding place. The fast-moving, tension-filled plot combined with the variety of animal sounds in the text will make this a popular read-aloud. Preschool-Grade 1. --Randall Enos

5.0 out of 5 stars Great message, great book, June 12, 2009
This review is from: Chicken Soup (Hardcover)
When I first picked up this book I was a bit worried at what the message might be considering the title. The last thing I wanted to read to my kids was about a chicken being chased down, killed and added to a pot of soup. I ended up loving it! The chicken is a guest to a bowl of vegetable soup. Wonderful story for all young children. We enjoyed it and it as a very humane and compassionate message. Two thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun farm tour, May 18, 2009
This review is from: Chicken Soup (Hardcover)
Mrs. Farmer has the big pot out and that means she's making chicken soup - so all the chickens must hide. But Little Chickie has a cold and her sneezing keeps giving her away to Mr. Farmer. Can she escape the cook's pot? A fun farm tour receives zany drawings by David Gavril.
