3.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for NASCAR or car fans!

Honestly, I know nothing about NASCAR and I really don't like the sport in general, but I still appreciated the book and I know quite a few people who would love it! The stories are real and told fro drivers and other NASCAR insiders. The book is also neatly broken down into sections including:

Lessons Learned, Dale, Behind and Beyond the Wheel,...

Although I am an avid NASCAR fan, upon finishing this book, I came to the realization that you don't even have to know what NASCAR stands for to appreciate the storys and messages conveyed within the pages. I will admit some background on driver deaths would be very helpful information if I didn't know the history as well as I do. ... My favorite story is also one of the shortest in the book. "Special Delivery" will make you think twice about that big brown truck when you see it next time I gauruntee. Definitely the saddest story in the book in my opinion. (page 33- I've had so many people read it I've put the page to memory). If you've ever read Chicken Soup books, you'll know what to expect with the wide variety of topics discussed, and if you're a NASCAR fan, you'll enjoy the NASCAR ties expressed in each story. Definitely worth the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Reading, May 27, 2003

This review is from: Chicken Soup for the NASCAR Soul (Paperback)
I bought this book because my brother Robert Faiella contributed 2 stories to it ("Go to a race" and "Think before you boo"). However, after reading his two stories and then flipping through the other stories I realized that this truly is a wonderful book. It was great to see the personal sides of the drivers and learn how their generosity, talents and skills have touched so many lives. If you enjoyed the other Chicken Soup for the Soul series, you'll enjoy this book too - even if you never did watch a race!! Try it or like my brother says...Go to a race!

I just finished this wondefully touching book. It's filled with stories from the drivers themselves, that you won't hear about anywhere else. There are stories from fans like you and me. I highly recommend it to any true fan of the great sport of racing.

5.0 out of 5 stars best nascar book, April 18, 2005

I read this book because I am a huge NASCAR fan and I thought it would suit me. This book includes exactly what the cover says it does, inspirational stories of courage, speed, and overcoming adversity. If you aren't usually a NASCAR fan, I think you can still enjoy this book. I also think you can enjoy this book if you aren't a common Chicken Soup reader. While watching coverage of races and reading the stories on the NASCAR drivers, you really only get to see the racing side of the drivers, but in this book, you get to know what some of the drivers are really like. For instance, some wouldn't have thought Gordon would be so charitable and take his show car to a kids' school, who was going blind and take him on a ride. Throughout this book, you hear from nearly every perspective in NASCAR, whether it be the drivers, fans, commentators, reporters, or even people who work in the garages. Something unique about this edition to the Chicken Soups' are the color images inserted in the middle of the book. I thought these were a bit out of place for this books theme because they were mostly images of drivers in victory lane or racing. This book will make you proud to be a NASCAR fan if you are one, and if you aren't, then you will probably begin tuning into the races on Sundays. My favorite story was the one where an older racer by the name of Joe Weaver takes one more lap around the track years after a highway accident left him rehabilitating in a nursing home and stopped him from racing. It was truly an inspirational story. I highly suggest this book to anyone and everyone, it is a great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars satisfying "soup", April 28, 2003

I purchased a copy of this book for my dad, but decided to read it before sending it to him. I'm so glad I did! It was a very enjoyable and appropriately FAST read.

The drivers contribute some stories and I really appreciate their perspective. There are stories not just from the contemporary drivers, but also from legends like Ned Jarrett and Richard Petty. Some of the stories are little windows in to the drivers' lives -- look for a story called "Jeff Gordon's Training Wheels" by John Bickford and Claire B. Lang.

However, it's the "pro" writers' stories I find the tastiest. David Poole, Carol Einarsson, Rob Faiella and Marty Smith are some of my favorite writers on the web and they provide some of this book's best moments. Most of the stories are sweet without being too saccharine -- there's a great deal to identify with if you are a fan. Carol Einarsson's "The Little Girl's Shoe" starts the collection off with lots of horsepower and I also really enjoyed Rob Faiella's commentary "Go to a Race."

All in all, a great book for fans and people who wonder what NASCAR is all about.

3.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for NASCAR or car fans!, February 22, 2010

Honestly, I know nothing about NASCAR and I really don't like the sport in general, but I still appreciated the book and I know quite a few people who would love it! The stories are real and told fro drivers and other NASCAR insiders. The book is also neatly broken down into sections including:

Lessons Learned, Dale, Behind and Beyond the Wheel, Never Give Up, Romance and Other Random Acts of Racing, Behind the Billboards, The Secrets to Success, Heroes Everyday and Otherwise, The Business of Speed, The Best Medicine, On (and Off) Track, and All in the Family.

I really think my father-in-law who I have never seen touch a book, might even enjoy this Chicken Soup bool because he is a HUGE NASCAR fan! If all else it can be a bathroom book for the man in your life! (Come on that is where they read anyways!) It is easy to pick up and read a story since it is only 2-3 pages. I would definitely recommend this book for any NASCAR fan or car fan in general really!

I received this book to review but it is 100% my opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sutton story, April 26, 2003

This review is from: Chicken Soup for the NASCAR Soul (Paperback)
Hello. I just read the Chicken Soup for the NASCAR Soul book and loved the entire thing, but one story was really amazing. The story on Kelly Sutton by Andrew Kossak was my favorite one in the book. Her story and his writing were incredible. Great job by everyone as Chicken Soup has hit the jackpot again.
