5.0 out of 5 stars Great Real-Life Stories behind the songs! June 10, 2011
Format:Paperback
First off let me say I am not a country music fan, but as someone who loves to read non-fiction this book is great! "Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music" features 101 stories told by the writes of popular country songs. They include how the writer thought of the song, how the artist acted/felt about recording it, history of the song in general and more. It was actually really interesting to read these stories and for someone who really appreciates country music and knows the songs. I do like country artists like Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood and Johnny Cash and all of them have stories in there. There is a great story too based on the song "Live Like You Were Dying" which was recorded by Tim McGraw. The writers of the song passed the song to him not knowing that Tim rides bulls and that his father was actually dying at the time, Tim decided to record the song anyway since it was actually what he was going through. Oh and at the end of the 2-3 page story of each song, there is even a snippet of the song/chorus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup for the Soul Country Music May 19, 2011
Format:Paperback
Randy Rudder's "Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music" is an inspirational collection of more than 100 of your favorite country songs. While many fans may focus on the artist singing the song, I think the meat and potatoes to any successful tune is the songwriter behind that creation. In this book, the story comes straight from the songwriter's mouth in enjoyable bites of information. We hear from Jimmy Webb who talks about the Glen Campbell hits, "Wichita Lineman" and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," Tom T. Hall dishes about his musings for "Harper Valley P.T.A.," Bobby Braddock reveals the history behind Tammy Wynette's "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" and Alex Harvey tells about the person in his life who inspired "Delta Dawn." These are just a small sampling of the songs and the people who penned them. Their stories breathe life into the music and lyrics. Even working in country music for 25 years as a d.j. and feature producer, there are many of these stories I've never heard or at least with not as much careful detail. Often interviews I did with songwriters gave a small glimpse into the birth of a song, but Randy's book delivers a beautiful bounty of information in small informative doses and breathes life into the emotions and thoughts of the songwriter. I love it. I want seconds of this bowl of chicken soup. There are more great songs with fascinating stories to tell I'm sure!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it, even tho' I'm not a country music fan March 18, 2014
By Linda
Format:Paperback
I'm not really a country music fan, but I am a fan of stories and song/story connections. And there's an interesting story behind every song, even though we rarely think about the person who wrote it, much less their motive. That is precisely what drew me to this book - the inspiration that helped produce a song. I don't know many of the songs featured in this book, but I still enjoyed learning what the writer had to share, especially for the songs that I do know: Long Black Veil, I Hope You Dance, Holes in the Floor of Heaven... Some songs were inspired by the name of a city, some came from a catchy phrase overheard by the writer, and many from a personal experience. I learned some interesting things from this volume: Who knew Shel Silverstein wrote country music songs? The most inspiring stories were the ones telling how a certain song helped the listener through some trying times. Like the man sharing how Jesus Take the Wheel helped him and his wife when they were faced with the devastating news that his wife, five months pregnant, was diagnosed with cancer.

In some cases a song played a significant role in changing a person's life: Ricky Skaggs tells about the time when he was listening to Focus on the Family and heard a man say that he was out with a woman one day, when the song Halfway Home Cafe, written by Paul Overstreet and Johnny Barranco, and recorded by Richky Skaggs, came on the radio. It made him stop and think about his life. He decided then and there to end it with this woman and called his wife. He begged for forgiveness and his wife responded, "I've been praying for you. I was praying for you just as the phone rang."

To quote from the foreward: You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be entertained.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now I understand May 11, 2011
Format:Paperback
I am not a country music expert or even a rabid fan. But I loved this book. Knowing the stories behind the songs makes them come alive in a way that just hearing them does not. Even with a beautiful rendition by a big name star it's more moving to know the origin of the lyrics. Chicken Soup for the Soul - Country Music is everything you'd expect from a Chicken Soup book. The real life stories make it easy and engaging reading. Songs really do reveal the lives of the writers. And frequently, I realize that I too experienced that challenge or victory in my own life. I hope this is the first of more behind the scenes of our favorite country songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the author October 12, 2011
Format:Paperback
Fans of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music" book may want to purchase "Classic Country Demos Vol. 1," which includes eight of the original songwriter demos of songs that are highlighted in the book. If you order the E-book you could, for example, read Allen Shamblin's account of how he and Tom Douglas wrote the Grammy-winning "The House That Built Me" for Miranda Lambert, and then download their original demo: a true, multi-media experience. Enjoy.
