He's a chicken! He's a hare! He's Chickenhare! And he's your new favorite comic-book character, whether you know it or not! Night is falling on the frozen landscape as Chickenhare and his turtle friend Abe find themselves on their way to be sold to Kaus - an insane taxidermist with a penchant for unique animals and enough emotional baggage to go on a very long vacation. With the help of two mysterious new companions, our fuzzy, feathered and amphibious heroes endeavor to escape their dire fate. But they soon discover that might not be so easy when they get caught up in an adventure that could bring Klaus's villiany to an end for good... or they all might die. Whatever happens, Chickenhare is sure to charm, scare and delight readers young and old alike!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up—Chickenhare is a hare with the feet and feathers of a chicken, and he and his turtle friend, Abe, are the valuable property of Klaus, a twisted taxidermist who has killed many of the animals in the surrounding area "for home decor purposes." They manage to escape along with two other prisoners and now Buttons, Klaus's beloved, deceased pet goat, wants to help them end his former owner's tyranny. A simple layout with clean lines and conventional paneling make this book suitable for young readers new to comics, but the dark humor is not. It can be quite gruesome: Klaus's house is filled with eerie displays of his taxidermy victims and, at the end of the story, victorious animals eat their human enemies. While the characters are quirky and likable, the story is resolved without much development on their part. Chickenhare owes an influence to Jeff Smith's "Bone" series (Scholastic) but lacks its complexity of plot and character, as well as its emotional depth. A second volume is forthcoming, however, so perhaps there is still room for the story to evolve.—Lisa Goldstein, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars What's a chickenhare? You'll have fun finding out!, October 3, 2006
This review is from: Chickenhare Volume 1: The House Of Klaus (v. 1) (Paperback)
I picked up a copy of Chickenhare the other day and couldn't put it down! The plot moves at a fast pace, the dialogue crackles, and the artwork is top notch. It's more off-beat than your standard comic book, is delightfully quirky, and has plenty of surprises. The author does a great job of providing plenty of suspense while not shorting us on the laughs. The only downside is that the prologue from the website is not in the book. I'm hoping it will be included in a sequel or second printing so I can have the Chickenhare saga in its entirety. Can't wait for the next installment!

The artwork is beautiful in its simplistic manner and the story is great. The book follows Chickenhare and his friend Abe (the bearded turtle) as they try to escape from the taxedermist. Along they way the meet a unique cast of characters. Grine writes the story almost as a teaser to what the story could be and this book leaves you wanting to understand the characters more. Can't wait for the follow up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, October 30, 2006
This review is from: Chickenhare Volume 1: The House Of Klaus (v. 1) (Paperback)
PICK UP THIS BOOK. Its amazing. I bought it the other day at the mo-kan con. That night at the hotel I read it practically cover to cover. Very clean art style and love the humor. And to top that Chris is a really nice guy. My girlfriend and I spent a good bit of time chatting with him and two other really cool indie artists.(Matt Hawkins [...] and Kyle Strahm, [...]) If you like to laugh, look at nice art,and help amazing storytellers break into the biz...buy this book!
