Highly recommended,

This review is from: A Chicken's Guide to Talking Turkey with Your Kids About Sex (Hardcover)
Family psychologist Dr. Kevin Leman and sexuality educator Kathy Flores Bell present A Chicken's Guide To Talking Turkey With Your Kids About Sex, a straightforward guide for parents and educators about teaching young people about the first period, first nocturnal emission, dating relationships, STDs, molestation, and much more. A Chicken's Guide To Talking Turkey With Your Kids About Sex offers useful advice in down-to-earth terms concerning what needs to be taught, how to build a bond of trust and support, and how to sound fully credible when promoting abstinence in a culture that is media-soaked with sexual imagery, as well as more basic tips concerning trials of puberty such as proper hair and skin care, oral hygiene, and more. Highly recommended.

This book is excellent! You don't even have to wait until your kids are older to read this book. The practical suggestions they give begin with pre school age children, and continue up until your kids are 16 and 17. I highly recommend this book as a must-read for any parent!!

I have found Dr. Leman's books on childrearing very useful. Here he teams up with Kathy Bell to help parents build strong relationships with their "tweenagers" so they can effectivly pass on their own values. I especially like the straight talk to parents who fear being hypocrites because they misused their sexuality, and now want to tell their kids "don't do that!"This book is about so much more than the typical "plumbing lesson." As a sex educator and a parent of seven, myself, I like the hands-on tools Kathy uses to illustrate the "plumbing" aspects, but especially the emotional aspects of sexuality. And she expand that focus to help parents discuss "neck up" issues. (Don't know what those are? Read the book.) Don't rely on the school or the youth group to form your child's views on sex, marriage, and family life. Be a proactive parent. Read this book if you need a push in that direction. It even has an index of topics, so you can quickly find the pages that discuss what you need to talk about NOW. I would have liked to have seen a little more on dealing with masturbation. The few pages that cover it don't emphasize enough it's connection to pornography and addidictive behaviors that can destroy relationships. Other than that, excellent, helpful book.

A long time fan of Leman's work and appearances, I was thrilled to see that he had a book on a subject I have been dreading discussing with our 9 year old son. Leman's humor and good-sense parenting advice reminded me that teaching your kids about sex begins long before "the talk" becomes necessary - it is the way you raise your children, with limitations, without instant gratification, and in the way you respect your own spouse that speaks volumes to our children about sex. Hooray for Leman! I am so glad that there is someone who can guide me in a Christian way on a vast number of subjects while still making it a fun read.

Wonderful Guide,

A wonderful guide to helping your child grow into adulthood. A "no-fear" approach to the truth about body changes, peer-pressure and relationships. It is the responsibility of the parents to make sure their own children knows the facts. It's not up to the schools, folks. God made our bodies, this book acknowledges his wonderful creation.

My Girlfriend & I Call It The Poultry Book,
This review is from: A Chicken's Guide to Talking Turkey with Your Kids About Sex (Paperback)
I love Dr. Leman's books! I asked him for help talking with my boy about sex, drugs etc that face teens. He suggested this book and THANK GOD he did. It is real...it works...its a Christian prespective. He makes himself seem "real" and like me. He has a sense of humor that holds my attention and he shares pieces to his own life that comfort me. He is one of my favorite authors & I can't wait to get another book of his to read. This is a must have for anyone raising a teen these days. It is not any easy topic whether you are ok with be blunt about sex or not...Dr. L. gives suggestions such as having sex talks in the car. This book made my boy listen & helped me to present sex in a Christian perspective for him. Dr. L. explains boys & girls & all their parts/relationships/thinking in between. My parents were open about sex with me but I still learn a TON in this book about myself & men. Don't question it- buy this book!

This is a phenomenal Christian based book for families who want to approach the 'big' talk with their kids. It is NOT your basis anatomical guide on the birds and the bees. Rather it is an indispensable guide on how to connect with your kids early and keep the lines of communication open so that as sexual issues or questions arise, they are comfortable enough to approach you, and you are comfortable enough with them to discuss it. Many great ideas and suggestions in talking to your kids about sex and life in general. LOVE IT!

A Christian Approach,
By
This review is from: A Chicken's Guide to Talking Turkey with Your Kids About Sex (Paperback)
Be aware that this book takes a highly Christian approach to discussing sex. While much of the advice--especially the real-life scenarios--are great, the book focuses on abstinence (pg 190 includes "How to tell if your school's sex education curriculum effectively teaches true abstinence") and prayer ("Situations like these [when your child becomes sexually active] remind us of the central importance of prayer during a crisis....pray for...God to hem your child in...." Total abstinence until marriage is not, in my opinion, a healthy sexual (or mental) choice. Parents who want to discuss sex with their children in a frank and non-Christian way (ie "kids, sometime in the distant future, but before you are married, you may choose to have sex....") should choose a different book.

I found the book very helpful in a practical manner in the process of how to begin talking about sex with your child. This was especially true about myself since this did not occur with my parents. The book does speak about sex from a Christain perspective which I found very helpful.

Having met and heard Kathy Bell speak in person as well as having read several of Kevin Leman's other books, this book was true to their characters and did not disappoint. Right now with a 3 year old and 20 month old and another baby on the way (both girls and a boy), I daily encounter situations where my response is setting the stage for the relationship they describe. I want to have that openness with my children as they grow and I appreciate the candidness and emphasis on truth and basic facts beginning with the head and basic hygiene as a little child. It has already made communication easier. Believe it or not, I look forward to, rather than dread, the coming years and challenges.
