Editorial Reviews

Product Description

What they want is fame.
All they have is drama.

Welcome to Louis B. Armstrong, New York City's most prestigious performing arts school, where the gifted, wanna-be starlets, and It Chicks are all on the rise. But when rehearsals give way to hot and heavy after-school sessions away from the barre and without the mic, the real drama begins.

Meet the hottest cast in town:

Tangie, the Dreamer. Skye the Drama Queen. Eden the Bombshell. Trey the Bad Boy. CJ the Thug with the Heart of Gold. Izzy the Wild Child. Regina the Silent Threat. And the Entourage: Marisol, Kamillah, Blackadocious, Vineet, and Lyle.

They're all playing the fame game and will do whatever it takes to nail it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good...but enough with the commericals, August 3, 2007
By nodice (Manchester, Ga United States) - See all my reviews
3.5 stars. It chicks- a black version of the Gossip girls...or is it? Hey, anything to get the kiddies to read, right? But Young adults books have changed since the 80's Sweet Valley High days. Teenagers nowadays apparently are smoking, drugging and sexing it up at thirteen and fourteen like it ain't no thang. This is likely the truth, but I'd think publishers would want to offer more positive books for this target audience-or at least warn parents somewhere on the cover if you see this book in the store and you're just picking up something that looks cute for teenager to read. I mean if I was a teenager and I read that this was what the cool kids were doing, then I'd be more inclined to do the same thing especially since this book doesn't ever show any reprecussions for making such decisions. So if you want to be cool, light up. As a writer, Ms. Williams main job is to engage and entertain and she does do this rather well, even if from time to time you get a little confused with so many characters. But where Ms. Williams went absolutely overboard was all the name brand dropping and make up tips. I mean,is Ms. Williams getting paid extra to put all these name brands in here? After Run DMC infamously promoting Addias and not getting a red dime, you'd think that we stop this nonsense. (Remember: Jay-Z similar incident with a liquor company he was promoting and come to find out the president of such company held distain for the entire hip hop community.)
Truely there were so many parts that reminded me of the movie The Truman Show, when people would just suddenly bust out into a commerical in the middle of a conversation.
"Eden slammed her M.A.C Chesnut Lip Pencil down on her thigh and shot Marisol a look." pg 99
Really? Couldn't she just slam her lip pencil down?
This goes on and on, that I doubt Ms. Williams goes two pages without name dropping. And I have never known anyone to take one look at someone at a party and know the brand name of mascara a girl was wearing. It's just crazy.
And where is the love for the dark girls? All the girls in this book are pre-diva mulatto chicks with flowing locks and multicolored eyes. I think the only reference Ms. Williams made to a possible dark girl was on page 263 when some black guy was making out with a black girl. (that's how she worded it.) It's sort of misleading since there is a dark-skin girl on the cover. (There's a white chick too, but they weren't in the book either).
Despite this: It chicks is an entertaining story but could have been so much better if the makeup expert and fashionista would cut back on the name brand dropping or just have a tip section at the end of the chapters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!!!, May 15, 2008
It chicks is a very juicy, good read. Filled with drama, love, and friendship, this book is one you definitely need to read!!! The way Mrs.Williams engages her readers are incredible and makes you eat the story right up. The characters are all dynamic and have their flaws, but that what makes this book a whole lot of fun and entertaiment. I definitely cannot (I repeat) cannot wait to read Sixteen Candles (the sequel). Keep writing Mrs.Williams!!!!
