Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-In this easy-to-read biography, Burch gives children a simplified, but not simplistic, explanation of the clashing interests involved in the destruction of the South American rain forest. She recounts Mendes's childhood in a poor family in tropical Brazil and his growing awareness of the harm deforestation and burning caused his fellow rubber tappers. His eventual organization of local workers and demands for better living conditions resulted in his murder. His life's work and tragic death raised the awareness of the outside world in the area's ecological problems and resulted in some small steps towards their improvement. While the author paints perhaps too rosy a picture of the Brazilian willingness to change environmental policy, she does bring up important and significant issues. Average-to-poor quality, black-and-white and full-color photographs are scattered throughout the book.
