Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8-12-A clear and sympathetic portrait of the Nez Perce leader. Because of their cultural background, white settlers, soldiers, and statesmen tended to cast Indian groups in their own political molds. Hence, when Young Joseph came to be speaker for his people, he was considered to be "Chief." Taylor explains that the subject regarded himself more as a counselor and representative than as an equivalent of a president or king. This misunderstanding was exacerbated by the whites' casting the hunter/gathering Indian way of life, which demanded a great deal of territory, into one in which they should be content with small plots of land like the farmers and settlers. As with accounts of other tribes and their leaders, this biography is about a man whose adult life was spent trying to retain the traditional lands and way of life of his people. Numerous black-and-white archival photos and reproductions accompany the text.
