3.0 out of 5 stars Impressively solid, almost earthquake-proof, but height adjustment is scary, April 3, 2011

It took me a long time to research a stand that could hold a 24" (Dell 2407) and 27" (Asus Asus VE278Q) monitor. The main problem was: no reviews anywhere. I finally got this Chief and just assembled it this morning. I will update this review as I work with it longer, but I've got plenty to say already.

First thing to put to rest: I thought this was an awful lot of money for a simple stand. That is not so: there's a lot here. My monitors fit easily, and there's enough room (and enough beef) to handle 2 x 30" monitors. (Apple Cinema or Dell Ultrasharp fans with big eyes and lots of money? Yes: this stand could safely handle $4000 of oodle-pixel real estate.) I was worried about all that expensive screen real estate balanced on a single flimsy stand, so while waiting for delivery, I went out and bought a couple of discrete little clamps to secure it to my desk. I'll still use them, because I bought them already and I live in Earthquake-Central, but don't imagine for a minute this thing is flimsy. The base is a 15 lb slab of 1/4" sheet steel - I was lucky it didn't take my toes off when it slid it out of the box. The mounted monitors sit right on the assembly's centre of gravity and the whole thing is utterly solid. Given that this is a low-volume item, the listed price is perfectly fair, and given the weight, the shipping cost is also fair.

There's plenty of adjustment available: height, rotation, angle inward. I was worried that you can't adjust the height of the monitors separately, but it turns out to not be an issue: I didn't know it before, but all flat-screen monitors come with the same secure mounting bolt holes at the same relative position. The kit includes spacers to use when the bolt holes are recessed (as they are on my Dell). None of them were quite right, but my Dell is twice as thick as my Asus, so I didn't use any. I hadn't given cable routing a thought, but the people at Chief did: Running to my monitors I have DVI connectors, HDMI connectors, a DisplayPort connector, a USB connector (the Dell is a handy USB hub and has a card reader) and power connectors; they are all invisible.

The curvature on the monitor arm is perfect: as you turn your head from one monitor to the other, you find each one directly in front of you with your head centered. Each monitor can theoretically rotate 360 degrees, but there isn't quite enough height available to do that with either of mine. If you REALLY want to use a big monitor in portrait-mode, check their website at chiefmfg: these guys can oblige you. (If you dream of building yourself the monitor-wall from "Minority Report", these guys can do that, too.)

Now for a bunch of niggles, none of them particularly serious:

One of my monitor mounts can be tightened firmly; the other one stays a bit loose; a mystery as to why. That just means I have to butt it up the side of the other monitor to stop it rotating.

The height adjustment is, frankly, scary: it's really a two-person job, because when you loosen the clamp, the monitors will crash down unless you're already taking the strain with both hands or have a bottle jack in place. Another $15-odd of hardware would allow you to wind them up and down as you wished. Right now I'm stuck with mine too low: they'll stay that way until a friend comes over.

My stand is jet black, but all the standard screws and bolts that shipped with it are standard silver. Fortunately, my silver Dell monitor came with black bolts, which I switched over to my black Asus.

The instructions are execrable (except for the complete lack of the usual lawyer-noise, such as: "Warning: sitting in front of dual monitors all day can turn you into an obsessive Amazon review-writer"). In just 8 pages of instructions, they decide they need to use lots (and lots) of acronyms, which they don't bother explaining, why would they? Single example: They point an arrow at a large, Allen-keyed bolt and call it a 'SCREW, Freestand Pole Mounting, 3/8-16 x 1" (FHCS)'. No hint as to what FHCS is, but that's what they call the damn thing from then on. But don't worry about the instructions: you'll get past them.

To summarize: I really like the stand, so far very happy with my purchase. It cleaned up and organized my workplace no end, and when I get the height adjusted properly, my workplace will also be ergonomically perfect.

3.0 out of 5 stars solid, Heavy Duty, and very pleaseing to the eye but..., April 28, 2011

First of all I bought this from Newegg...this dual display mount is built solid and strong, its allows you to adjust

and tilt your monitors really anyway you want. The only reason I give it 3 stars is one of the brackets that holds the Monitor to the rail came faulty and cant be tightened firmly like the other one can, so one monitor droops down a little which kills the cool effect of having 2 monitors side by side...I did however order a replacement part for it so hopefully it will fix that issue. also the height adjustment can be tricky while you have monitors connected.

I'm very happy with the dual monitor mount

4.0 out of 5 stars Well put together, June 21, 2011

This review is from: Widescreen Dual Monitor Table (Personal Computers)
I bought this to mount a 27" iMac aside a 27" Apple cinema display. This was the only model I found that would support the +50 lbs combined weight of each. Currently I have only mounted the iMac and a 22" Samsung, but I have no doubt that this will work exactly as I had hoped. The mounting points for each monitor pivot extremely easily, so while (as some have pointed out) adjusting the height single-handed will be no fun, adjusting the horizantal position and individual angle of each monitor is a breeze. It's easy enough to permit rather casual re-adjustment in just a few seconds. The tightening system used to keep the monitors in the proper position works much better than I had thought it would upon first review. The frame even comes with a couple plastic pieces for routing cables that work surprisingly well.

My only complaint is rather trivial. It comes with several rubber feet that are sticky on one-side, but not with a diagram or advice for positioning them. It's not too difficult, but if you underestimate how front-heavy this thing is when the monitors are attached (as I did) and fail to position any of the feet within the front ~3" of the base plate (as I did), only quick reflexes will save your monitors from face planting if the balance is upset (and I'm thankful for them). I would really like to see same sort of warning with the feet or in the instructions letting you know that, if you use the feet, placing a couple within an inch of the front on both sides is critical.

That's a minor point when compared to the overall value, however. I'm really happy with the purchase.
