I have read many books on leadership but few of them have been as grounded in real life as this one. As a colleague of the Author I can say that he practices what he writes. This is not an exercise in ideas that should work, but a book that springs from his daily habits and actions. It has short and pointed chapters with excellent take away thoughts at the end of each one. It lends itself to reading a chapter a day and incorporating the concept into that days activities. Read and Grow.

Chief is a great read and an even better tool. If you are a leader or develop other leaders this book fills a unique niche. Rather than discuss various aspects of leadership theory, Chief demonstrates 20 core principles through the unique, true stories of leadership in African village life. It's refreshing, entertaining and most of all, real world. In the village, reality dominates theory and leadership - both good and bad - lives in huts. It's amazing to "see" the leadership skills we employ used in a culture completely alien to ours. Then, to aid reader development, exercises at the conclusion of each chapter drive home the lesson in practical, challenging applications. I have mentored leaders for three decades. Chief is now in my top 3 leadership books. Because of it's ease of reading but depth of insight, it will be my first recommendation from now on. And if you aren't that interested in leadership but want to read some entertaining, funny and profound true stories, read Chief. In a word, OUTSTANDING!

Another book on leadership?? A few pages into Chief and you will discover that the creativity, simplicity, and practicality of the book are a refreshing contrast to much of the existing literature on the topic. The author offers a rich perspective on leadership as a TCK (Third Culture Kid), a veteran missionary, and as the CEO of an organization that ministers in over 40 countries around the world. Chief is a fun read yet profoundly insightful. Twenty brief chapters address the most essential functions of leadership while demonstrating that leadership is not only what one DOES as a leader (function), but who one IS as a leader (character). The author defines leadership in his introduction, then illustrates how it fleshes out in the lives of leaders throughout the remainder of the book. In addition to identifying basic leadership skills, Chief addresses the challenges and costs of leadership and fittingly concludes with a chapter on succession. For those involved in the search and development of global leaders, Chief is much more than just another book on leadership: it is a must read blending theory and practice in an African tribal setting that could be applicable to any culture.

Paul Seger has developed the skills necessary to be an excellent leader of men and organizations. No wonder his book on leadership is credible, practical, creative, and inspiring. I underlined insights on every page, while enjoying his stories of life in the African village in which he grew up.

What an interesting and practical look at 20 important lessons for leadership at almost any level. Our family enjoyed reading a chapter at a time at the breakfast table with our 17 year old son to help him become more aware of the areas of life he needs to take leadership in as he heads off to college next year. The African proverbs and pictures of life in the village where the author grew up provide great hooks to hang these truths on and keep them in your memory. This book is well worth the price and will be one that I revisit again and again. I also have already sent it as a gift to many friends in various roles of leadership.
