Book Description

1591144590 978-1591144595 August 15, 2004
In the tradition of The Bluejacket's Manual, this new guide serves as "mentor" to the U.S. Navy's Chief Petty Officers and "gouge" to those who aspire to be CPOs. It is the result of an extensive review process by a select board of CPOs, including those assigned to the Senior Enlisted Academy in Newport, Rhode Island. The book provides extensive guidance in the four major skills areas deemed essential for today's successful CPO: leading, communicating, developing, and supporting. Among the sixteen useful chapters are "The Moral Compass," "Written Communications," and "Advancement and Professional Development," and there is specific guidance in topics unique to being a chief, including the conduct of CPO initiations, living in the Chief's Mess, and wearing Khakis. Both textbook and reference work, the guide is mandatory reading for all E-6s and above.

2.0 out of 5 stars OK but....., January 2, 2007
By
This review is from: Chief Petty Officer's Guide (Blue and Gold) (Blue and Gold) (U.S. Naval Institute Blue & Gold Professional Library) (Hardcover)
This book is OK, it has a lot of useful info however more than half of the book is on uniforms. Since the Navy is revamping all the uniforms I fear that this book will become obsolete. I think that the uniform section was wasted and should have been used for something more about......maybe....LEADERSHIP! The uniform section is basically just a carbon copy of the uniform regs.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the New CPO but good for the new MBA., September 9, 2004
This review is from: Chief Petty Officer's Guide (Blue and Gold) (Blue and Gold) (U.S. Naval Institute Blue & Gold Professional Library) (Hardcover)
The Chief Petty Officer is the backbone of the Navy. The officers provide overall direction, and the sailors make the ships go. In between is the CPO who takes the commands from the officers and converts it into something that the individual sailors can do. As such, the CPO is in a leadership position without which nothing would happen. It is no surprise then that the sections of this book deal with leadership: Leading, Communication, Developing, and Supporting.

The Navy approach is different. In industry you wouldn't find foremen in a factory with a specific responsibility for developing young executives. But in the Navy the CPO had a direct responsibility for developing the junior officers who are above him. This is a low price book that I'd recommend to the recent MBA graduate, just as I would to the new CPO learning his job.
