This is the first installment in a projected trilogy about Christopher Columbus Colt, professional scout and nephew of the famous gun manufacturer, Samuel Colt. Chris Colt is a politically correct chief of scouts, sympathetic to the plight of the American Indian and determined to use his influence with the U.S. cavalry to intervene on the Indians' behalf. As the book opens, he's about to go to work for General George Armstrong Custer, a disdainful egomaniac who is bent on warring ruthlessly against the Indians to win popular approval and lay claim to the presidency of the United States. And if that's not shameful enough, Custer is also widely rumored to be in on the Indian Ring, a group of Washington bureaucrats working with crooked traders and federal agents to profiteer on the sale of government-supplied cattle, blankets and other goods intended for the Indians on the reservations. Colt hopes to use his position as Custer's chief of scouts to expose the corrupt general. But Custer, wise to Colt's suspicions, keeps a tight rein on his underling and even retaliates at one point, having Colt jailed on trumped-up charges. Bendell ( Crossbow ) offers an engaging if perhaps anachronistic and historically debatable tale with plenty of action and a generous helping of romance as Colt has a number of trysts and meets the woman of his destiny.

More About the Author
Don Bendell is an author of 26 novels and books with over 2,500,000 copies of his books in print worldwide and a successful motion picture. He is a former US Army Special Forces (Green Beret) captain and decorated and disabled Vietnam veteran and the father of two Special Forces NCOs who are Iraq/Afghan War vets and still serving our nation. He also owns and is Grandmaster of Bendell Karate in Pueblo West and Canon City, and in 1995 was inducted into the International Karate Hall of Fame. His master instructor wife Shirley is also a 2009 inductee, making them the first and only couple in history to both be in the Hall of Fame. Don has a Master of Science degree in Leadership from the Ken Blanchard College Business at Grand Canyon University and a BS in Business from Colorado Christian University. Don has 6 grown children and 9 grandchildren and describes himself simply as "a real cowboy with a real ranch, a real horse, and real cows." He and his wife own the beautiful 200 acre Strongheart Ranch south of Florence, Colorado.

Very Poor History and a boring read,

Outside of the very slow and boring pace of the book, the characterizations did not hold my attention, but really, the subject matter was most outrageous. General Custer in reality sacrificed his military career to testify on behalf of the Indians (May 1876) when they were being ripped off by the corrupt administration of President Ulysses Grant. Custer's testimony forced the Sec. of War to resign in disgrace and exposed Grant's younger brother Orville in the corrupt Indian ring. As punishment, Grant removed Custer from command of the upcoming Indian Campaign. One of Custer's closest friends was his Indian Scout 'Bloody Knife' who died with Custer at his last battle. Custer is also believed (by the Lakota and the Cheyenne) to have married a Cheyenne woman who bore him a child. Hardly the actions of a man who hated Indians. If one is writing a book on historical fiction, you need to at least have your facts bearing some semblance to the truth. Custer was certainly not a part of the corrupt Indian Ring, nor was he sympathetic to them. On the contrary, he was very sympathetic to the plight of the Native Americans, once saying that if he were an indian, he would be fighting alongside them for their freedom, rather than living meekly on the confines of a reservation existing on handouts from the government.

It's O.K, I guess...,

Christopher Columbus Colt works as the civilian Chief of Scouts for the United States Army and has many adventures. This, his first, introduces him and places him at the command of Custer just before the Battle of the Little Big Horn (a.k.a. Custer's Last Stand). It's is easily read and quickly finished. May be good for summer reading, or for those times you have to read in short spurts. Never really grabbed my full attention, though.
