5.0 out of 5 stars As good as Irish music gets
I just got around to getting some more Irish music after years of listening to the Pogues and Flogging Molly and wanting some stuff that seemd to influence them. 3.0 out of 5 stars This must be the only Chieftains I just like
Don't get me wrong I love this group but I just didn't feel it this time. 6. If I Had Maggie in the Wood is probably the standout for this collection. This is a great album if you need Irish background music but the group was always at its best when the songs told a story and there is none of that here.

I just got around to getting some more Irish music after years of listening to the Pogues and Flogging Molly and wanting some stuff that seemd to influence them. Hearing traditional Irish music in the background of movies set in Ireland also gave me a taste for it. My early tries made me cautious though as I bought some stuff without knowing what I was getting and got schmaltzy string stuff, sort of Irish music for Lawrence Welk fans.

So I picked my way carefully, and kept checking these guys, but hesitating. Now, having bought this album I say these guys are great, rousing bar music (one of my favorite types of music), and definitely one of the main fore-runners of the Pogues or Flogging Molly in my humble opinion. I wish I had bought some of their stuff years ago. I picked up their stuff many times in record stores, but now I can preview albums I found they are just as exciting as any traditional Irish band and yet with no modern touches, at least on this album. I know they have done some stuff recently that is not necessarily traditionally Irish, but highly reviewed.
