5.0 out of 5 stars musical history
If you have seen the PBS pledge show and are wondering what's on this DVD: It's musical history, plain and simple, along the lines of "Will the Circle be unbroken" and Donal Lunny's "Bringing it all back home" in a perfect production on stage. Sadly it was Derek Bell's last concert but what a concert it was! All the Nashville stars (incl. Earl Scruggs)...

2.0 out of 5 stars not what I expected.
I suppose, it all depends on what you come to expect from a dvd. I was absolutely blown away by Celtic Woman produced by David Downes and also Riverdance, 10th year anniversary. This dvd isn't all bad though, it DID have a rather annoying 'ancient' tv screen blotting out the beautiful scenery of ireland. I'm really not quite sure what the intent was, aside from telling...

Sadly it was Derek Bell's last concert but what a concert it was! All the Nashville stars (incl. Earl Scruggs) stood in line to play and record with the Chieftains (see also the 2 CD set). Green grass meets Bluegrass - awesome!

I was astounded by this DVD and let me assure you I am not astounded very easily. It is pure magic from beginning to end. Watch the Chieftains, and the other performer's eyes, and you can see the magic working. From the first moment I was on my feet dancing.

There are so many highlights I can't mention them all but watch for those 2 Canadian brothers who jump out dancing near the beginning. Pure joy.

The combining of Irish and Bluegrass music was long in coming and this is the real deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Toe tapping music DVD, August 11, 2009

This is a wonderful DVD of toe tapping music. Well worth the price. Sadly, between each song there is an off-stage interview about the song or about the singer. This is a bit tedious for the person who just loves music and would like to enjoy the concert uninterrupted. I personally wish they would have completely separated the talk from the music. One has to advance to the next track to cut out the talk. Much of the talk would be interesting only to the singer's mother. All-in-all it is a great collection of celtic and Blue Grass music performed by some outstanding musicians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old Plank Road is Amazing, April 23, 2008

This is an amazing assembly of talent, with The Chieftains as the common thread. The DVD has music that is not on the CD's, so this is very unique. All of the musicians, singers, and dancers are the tops. I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow - Most enjoyable evening spent watching the Chieftains, February 1, 2008

We ended up watching this twice the first evening. We had an informal meal with family and friends over. I popped this DVD in to share & provide some back ground music. Even the teenagers were enthralled with the Chieftains. After the crowd thinned out, I had to put this on again to enjoy the whole thing without distraction.

The top notch talent invited to play with the Chieftains contributed to the weaving of a tapestry of magic. Music that will stir your soul and keep your feet tapping.

I feel that I received so much more in the trade. Buying magic for a few dollars that I can go back and enjoy again and again.

Nicely done! The Chieftans: Down the Old Plank Road - The Nashville Sessions has just the right mix of "guests" and provides an entertaining concert. A smattering of interviews and a real nice mix of music make this a must buy for those interested in Celtic & Bluegrass music.
