Married to the feminist Naganuma Chieko, Takamura Kotaro modeled their relationship on sexual equality. In 1931 Chieko began to show signs of schizophrenia, which led to attempted suicide. In 1935 Takamura was forced to commit his wife, who died of tuberculosis three years later. These poems, centered on their relationship, are translated here for the first time.

About the Author

Born in 1883, Takamura began his life as a sculptor, but became better known as a poet, particularly using his wife and her mental illness as his subject.

I first discovered Kotaro Takamura when I was a college student in the 80's.
I was so inspired by him that I wrote several poems of his down in a poetry notebook. Recently I started writing my own poetry, so I decided to look him up again. I ordered his book "Chieko Poems." Once again I discovered
how much I admire his poetry. The love poems reveal his deepest thoughts about Love and Life in a intimate, heartfelt way. I highly recommend this book to people who love free verse poetry and the ideas of Whitman, Thoreau and Emmerson.
