This is the one I recommend,
By Joe Sellner (Mississippi, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Chihuahua Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks) (Paperback)
As a Chihuahua owner and volunteer for the National Chihuahua Rescue and Transport Society, I strongly recommend this book. I use it all the time. It is specific to the breed and covers all phases of a Chihuahua's life from weaning to the need for euthanasia. It covers anatomy, breeding, training, and genetic predispositions of Chihuahua's. Upon reading it to completion you will know everything there is to know about these tiny canines. One of the most useful chapters deals with the 5 minute physical that demonstrates the basic exam that you see your vet do, when he examines your dog. It has great pictures, but if you can only buy one book on "Chi's" this is the one I recommend.

A Great Chihuahua Breed Book,
By Liz Randall "Liz Randall" (S. Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Chihuahua Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks) (Paperback)
D. Caroline Coile, PhD. has written a breed manual that deals specifically with the cares and concerns of Chihuahuas. Many breed manuals contain a small amount of breed background with generalized dog care instructions, but Dr. Coile delves into the Chihuahua ancestory, techniques for training a Chihuahua, special feeding and health concerns of Chihuahuas, etc. It's easy and enjoyable to read and has wonderful pictures of Chihuahuas to boot. This is one book that I keep close by to refer to often as I care for my five pet chihuahuas.

Great for New Owners As Well,
By Heather Maddox (Marietta, GA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Chihuahua Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks) (Paperback)
I am a new Chihuahua owner, so I am looking to find advice about raising my wonderful puppy! I saw wonderful reviews on amazon about this book and decided to purchase it. I have read the entire book at various small settings over a 3 day period. It is short enough to get through and yet long enough to give detail about many aspects of the Chihuahua. I am very satisfied with this book. It is also small and thus handy! It has recommendations for a Five Minute weekly checkup, First Aid advice, and training techniques as well as much more. This book will be referenced many times throughout my Chihuahua's life.

One of the Best for a Newbie,
By Susan "Tornado Chi's" (Tornado, WV USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Chihuahua Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks) (Paperback)
As an owner of many chis I have found this book to be of great value to me. There are 154 pages of chihuahua information and lots of pics depicting all sizes and colors of chis(except the merle pattern!) Granted, not all pics follow the breed standard, but not all puppies are perfect either.
Has a good chapter on health problems common to chis, however it did not mention cryptorchidism which is common in the male, especially if they are line bred, and did not have much info on pyometra which can quickly become fatal in an unspayed female. The chapter on breeding is pretty extensive for a book not devoted to the subject of only breeding and the genetics sections is simple to understand, but very informative and worth learning if you intend to bred. Highly recommended for a first time owner, any one wanting to know about the chi or for an owner that would just like a good read about their faithful little friend.

I'm a few weeks away from getting my Chihuahua. I got this book on the great recommendations from here and thus far it has been a great book. I feel better prepared for my new Chi and am getting my cats ready for a new pal. Tips on getting the home ready, medical concerns that may arise, etc. have been invaluable to me.

NOT THAT INFORMATIVE,
By Jessica (Fort Worth, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Chihuahua Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks) (Paperback)
Even as a new owner of a Chihuahua, I know there has to be better books out there than this one. The information in this book isn't anything more than information you can find for yourself simply by doing a little online research. The pictures are not impressive and feature less than average dogs. After reading the reviews on Amazon, I decided to purchase this book (instead of the other titles) but I wish I had taken the time to check it out at a bookstore in town before going through the trouble of purchasing, waiting and then returning. If you are a new owner of a Chihuahua (or even a "veteran") simply search online. You'll find the same information.

This is a nice overview of Chihuahuas. It's a little basic if you already own a Chi, but great for a newbie. There are some wonderful pictures included.
