This volume considers the unique and overlapping long-term effects of all major forms of child maltreatment. The author integrates information on seven types of child abuse and neglect - ranging from sexual and physical abuse to mistreatment by alcoholic or drug-addicted parents - and outlines the complex ways in which abuse impacts on later psychosocial functioning.

Briere reframes traditional notions of psychopathology and describes treatment approaches to abuse-related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, interpersonal dysfunction, self-destructive behaviour, impaired self-reference and borderline personality disorder. Child Abuse Trauma will be an invaluable resource for abuse specialists and for general therap

5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to a difficult subject, November 7, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I picked this book up as an adoptive parent trying to get up to speed on the consequences of and treatment for the physical abuse my son experienced the first five years of life. What a great introduction this book is to the subject. Although certainly written for practitioners, it is eminently readable to someone without formal training in the subject, and it allowed me to better focus in on aspects of his behavior to bring to the attention of a therapist that I certainly would have otherwise missed. A terrific resource, even 15 years after publication. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Research to practice..., September 3, 2009
Briere's research is impeccable; he is a master of the field of PTSD understanding. This a volume that every clinician should have in their library, and every student clinician should be required to read. Not just research, but Briere's work connects seamlessly with field practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive resource for therapists, January 2, 2001
This review is from: Child Abuse Trauma: Theory and Treatment of the Lasting Effects (Interpersonal Violence:The Practice Series) (Paperback)
John Briere is a leader in the field of child abuse treatment and is therefore exceptionally knowledgeable on this topic. That exceptional knowledge shines through in this book. Clearly written and well organized, I highly recomend it to any therapist or human services worker who wants to increase her skills in assisting abuse survivors. -Sharice Lee- Author "The Survivor's Guide."
